Last night she started displaying symptoms in her right leg, so when I dropped her off at the vet this morning my vet took the time to re-evaluate Flora's right leg. It took some time, but she did manage to get her right leg to luxate. :( We're going to have xrays done on both legs to help confirm the diagnosis. She said this doesn't necessarily mean Flora will require surgery on her right leg, and we should wait and see how it is after her left leg recovers. I was trying so hard not to burst into tears... Poor Flora!

Anyhow, Flora is having surgery to fix a luxating patella in her left hindleg today, and I am praying and crossing my fingers and hoping that everything goes without a hitch. She was so sweet in the vet's office, and it broke my heart to leave her there. But I know it's necessary.

As a side note, Flora's breeder finally contacted me yesterday, and while very sympathetic, more or less implied that Flora weighed too much for her age (58#) and her luxating patella could have been exacerbated by that. I told that to my vet today and she kind of rolled her eyes and said Flora was in excellent shape, that she had a nice waist and her ribs were easily palpable. I thought it was a little unkind of the breeder to say that, but I know she's just concerned.

I'll update this in a few hours after the vet calls me to let me know how things went. :crossfing

Prayers and good thoughts for Flora coming from CT. It is so hard to leave a dog at the vets for surgery .. but she should be in good hands.

Sending additional wishes for a permanent fix, a speedy recovery and that her right leg will be just fine once her left leg is repaired

I didn't know Flora was having problems either, but now that I do, I'll send good thoughts her way. I hope everything goes well for the little girl, and she quickly recovers.

Well, good news and bad news. The vet called and said Flora is out of surgery and sleeping comfortably on her cot. The surgery went well and the vet thinks Flora is doing just fine.

The bad news is that the vet says not only did she see a luxating patella in both of Flora's knees, but she also saw some mild hip dysplasia in her left hip, but said it was hard to tell right now because she was so young, and recommended new xrays when Flora was near to 2 years old. :( I'm hoping that was just a little fluke and things will be okay on that front, but I'm not going to let anything take me by surprise now.

Anyhow, Flora is out of surgery and doing well. We pick her up around 5. I'm glad she's doing okay now.

Glad the surgery went well, and will hope that the HD doesn't come to pass. I know you'll feel much better when you have your baby home where she belongs.

That is my hope too. I know I can't let this get me all riled up, but it's natural to get upset when your dog receives a diagnosis like this. I was hoping beyond all hopes that the words "hip dysplasia" wouldn't come out of my vet's mouth, but... they did, so we'll deal. Hopefully careful management will keep her healthy. For now I'm just satisfied that she made it through her surgery okay. :D

Once she's healing well, talk to your vet about starting her on some glucosamine/chondroitin supplements like Cosequin DS. Many HD dogs never require surgery and do very well. Even though my girls don't have any probs, I've had them on the Cosequin to keep their joints mobile and lubricated as they age.
