He won't retrieve. He doesn't like balls... I think someone switched his brain with that of some other furry creature. Anyone else have a golden nonretriever?

My dog was the same, she had no interest at all in balls or sticks, at least not for fetching. She enjoyed chewing branches into tiny little woodchips and chewing up all my baseballs, but not fetching them.

Luck is weird too! He will play fetch all day long in the house. Outside, forget about it!

It is actually funny what he does and I will have to get it on video one day. He dashes out for the ball (outside). Stops full force at the ball. Paws it until he sees the wording on the ball. And then stops and walks away.

We always joke that "Penn" is just not good enough of a brand for him!

ROFL!!! I just wish, especially on days like this when I'm home sick, that I could get him to play ball so he will get some exersize and I won't feel bad about not getting him out for a walk.

I understand that Liz. I feel terrible when something comes up we can not go on a walk. Yesterday it was absolutely pouring out in the AM and there was no way I could take him. He sat by the door with his leash in his mouth just looking with the sad eyes "Is it time to go now?!?"

He's doing that now. He just wants to go out and I don't have the wind to even go to the end of the driveway, much less for the two miles we normally go.

I have two non retrievers. You have to be old to remember the TV show from the 70's called "Soap". I should have named mine Benson after the Butler from that show. Anyone remember him? When the doorbell rang, his famous line? "You want me to get that"? LOL....that is the same exact look both Murphy and Sampson give me when I throw pretty much anything for them to retrieve! Ball, stick, toy.....that LOOK. Maybe I am doing it all wrong and should be tossing T-Bones!

mine is more of a "golden beaver" than a golden retriever. All she wants to do is chew wood. No interest in balls, kongs, wubbas....nothing. If I throw a stick..she get it..but just to chew on it.
Razz isn't the greatest retriever either! He waits till Nyg or May do the retrieve and then he tries to take whatever away from them. He then proceeds to chew up the ball into tiny pieces. Occasionally, yes, I said occasionally, he will retriever but I must admit that he's a real klutz!:doh:

May & Nyg would retriever all day & then all night! Nyg will back off but May is a real bug with her ball and keeps putting it on your lap or on the couch beside you. If you don't throw it, she will keep nudging you. The funniest scene was BIGDAWG sleeping on the couch and May had placed the ball on the couch right beside his face. BIGDAWG is asleep but swatting at the ball as if it's a fly that has landed on his nose:p::p: He'd push the ball away, May would push it right back!

So, the score for our household is 2 ballhounds & 1 slug:uhoh: but we love them all!

I am not that old but I recall a show like that. Maybe I have seen reruns or something.

Liz I wish I was anywhere around you to take that sweet little Jake out for a walk. His picture under the bed is absolutely adorable!

Everyone else swears by the Kong. Luck is not too fond of that. Actually any toy he can not destroy. He will take the kong, throw it as high as he can with his mouth (which makes all the treats fly out). Eat them all and be done with it! I just tried peanut butter at first he walked away. Then he must have decided it is silly to waste food and went back to it.....only so food would not be wasted....ha

Holy cow, that's exactly what I say about Max! I throw the ball, he looks at me, and I go get it. And I swear to you, he's laughing at me.

None of our three like to play fetch. Of course, if one grabs a ball, Kong or bone--then ALL of 'EM have to have the same item. They then work themselves into a frenzy playing 'keep away', 'steal the bone' or whatever--grunts, growls, ROOOOOOOOs and howls. It's a scream.

But no 'fetch'.

Go figure.......

Not a mutant but just a little different. Any golden I have owned has the opposite issue but I have seen other retrievers devlop retrieving ability later on. But don't give up hope! There are some dogs whose retrieving instinct doesn't kick in until they get a little older. Either way you still have a cool dog to do stuff with just maybe not the all-time world retriever!

Good luck,
Christina

My dog won't fetch/retrieve.

He'll chase a stick then take off with it somewhere to chew it apart/eat it.

He loves chewing his tire and occasionally his little squeaky toy. Every other toy gets ignored.

If you try to throw something he'll just sit there watching it go away LOL

He also can't swim.
