Knees are really optional. While goldens may have patella issues, it's not as prevalent as hips/elbows problems.

Having xrays of the hips and elbows done is optional too... but it's advisable if you are going to keep your dog active (major league hiking or any running) or do stuff (agility, obedience, etc) with your dog... you should in good conscience have the hips and elbows checked. It's not just a breeding concern. It's about knowing what you are going to be dealing with so you can keep your dog sound.

That's just once - when your dog is about 2 and most likely done growing.
