Just wanted to say hello to everyone. We have a 10 yr. old Golden Retriever named Rusty who was just diagnosed this week with Hemangiosarcoma. We are devastated by the news, we really thought we'd have him a few more years. Our vet does not recommend surgery so we are just going to give him as much love and attention as we can until he lets us know it is time to say goodbye. I found this site while researching this disease. It's really been an eye opener to read how many GR's are affected with this horrible disease. I am looking forward to meeting lots of new Golden friends.

Sorry to hear your sad news. Anytime young or old it is not easy to lose our fur babies.

We lost our Golden in April 08. She was so special I didn'tthink we would ever het another one. We did, she is 8 months old & we are getting another one next week.

There is another emember on her who lost a dog to hemangio who's name was also Rusty. We met them when they were getting a lkittermate to our 8 month old.

Hi Kathi, I'm new here too. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog :( How long do they say he has??

I actually grew up in MD too (only been in Cali a little over a year). What part are you from?
Hi, nice to meet another Marylander, even if you have moved out west! The vet is saying a month but right now you wouldn't even know he is sick, he is happy, eating like a horse and moving around just fine, maybe just a little slower than before. It is hard to believe that he may be gone in a month. We're hoping to prove them wrong and have him with us at least through Christmas.

We are in Glen Burnie, where are you from?

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, I know what you mean about them being so special. I know we will eventually get another one but right now I can't imagine another one being as special as Rusty. We also have 3 other dogs, Sadie a 12 yr. old yellow lab, Rocky a 6 yr. old Toy Fox Terrier and Zippy, a 5 yr. old JRT mix. Even with the other 3 here I just cannot imagine life without our beloved Rusty. I know they will miss him as much as we will.

That is wonderful that you are going to have 2 Goldens to love and spoil! They are such special dogs. I have a friend who has lost 3 in the last 11 years and she always gets another one within several months of losing one. All of hers have been rescues as is all of our dogs except for Sadie, she came to us at 8 weeks. A house is just not the same without a Golden! Best wishes on your new addition!

I hope you do prove them wrong and that Rusty has a bit more time in him for you and your family :)

I was born in Salisbury but lived my whole life in Calvert County.
My family moved to Kent Island when I graduated high school but I moved back to GB when I got married. My Mom and brother still live on the shore. I have a good friend who lived in Dunkirk for many years and just moved to PA a year or so ago. What brought you to CA?

So sorry to hear about Rusty's diagnosis. Just keep making sweet memories each day that he's still with you, taking him to his favorite places, letting him have the foods he adores, taking loads of pictures. It's is so darned hard to know that your beloved guy is leaving you all too soon; many of us have been in your shoes and know the heartache.

Thanks so much for your kind thoughts, they are very comforting. We will definitely take lots of pictures, maybe now I will do that scrapbook that I've been wanting to do but just never got around to.

I love your quote, that is so true! Rusty has always been ready to party at a moments notice!

Also, do you have any pics of Rusty? I love to see progression pics, it's always awesome to see goldens as they grow. Every single one is gorgeous!
I don't have any of him when he was a puppy, we got him at 7 mos. from a neighbor who was neglecting him and wanted to get rid of him. I'll have to find some earlier pics when he was younger and post them. Here's one of him from this winter when we had our one and only decent snow! LOL

Hello from Pa. My Zeus went through that. The Vet gave him Prednisone and I really think it gave him a good quality of life for longer. So many of us have come to this site for the same reason. Hugs to you and Rusty!

Thanks for telling me about the Prednisone, I wonder why my vet didn't suggest it? I'm sorry you lost your Zeus to the same thing, I sure am finding out how very prevalent this is. Rusty and I send big hugs back!

I would call him and ask him what he thinks. There are alot of people on here that know alot more than I. I'm sure they will chime in! Thanks for the hugs.

So very sorry about Rusty, but lets hope that he has more time then expected.

TahneeGR posted about a study being done about hemangiosarcoma.

I know what you are going through, we lost our Bobby 12/31/08 to hemangio.
Thanks so much for your kind words about Rusty, I'm so sorry you lost your Bobby to the same thing. Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out. I think the more we know about something the better prepared we are to deal with it.
