My parents bred Shepherds for Schutzhund and in my opinion they are a fantastic breed when raised correctly (as with any other type of dog). Very smart, loyal, eager to please. We never had aggression issues with any of ours. They were good watch/guard dogs and would bark to alert when someone arrived at the house, but settled down immediately.
As far as socializing with other dogs...our "zoo" consisted of 3 adult shepherds, a beagle, a mastiff, a wolf and a handful of barn cats. All male with the exception of one shepherd and a few cats. Never a single fight.

The only reason I don't have a shepherd is (okay, this is a terribly silly reason lol)...
Their fur isn't soft enough for me lol I prefer something that feels more snuggly :p:

socialize socialize socialize....
Dont buy into the stereotypes..
They are prone to Hip Displ. in the worst way so do your genetic homework.
I had a GSD and he was the most affectionate dog Ive ever had. protective? Yes, but with 2 small boys at the time and traveling for work, I knew nobody was coming in our house. Best family dog in the world.
Socialize socialize socialize.. dont get a GSD together with one neighbor and one puppy at Petco and think he's socialized.

Deber's post on page 3 was EXCELLENT. I will add my two cents because I haven't seen it here yet. I currently have three goldens and had two other goldens previously. Over the span on my life (coming onto 54 years) I have met some very fine, well socialized GSs. In between these groups of goldens I had a GS Golden cross - thought it would be the best of both worlds. Jake loved the water - played with beavers in the lake and was a great companion with all of us in the family. He was, though, extremely protective. Never bit, but was a terrible barker. He would walk along the shore of the lake and bark at people who had canoe'd down the lake to visit. Jake also barked excessivly at Willy, a good friend who built my cottage. Got to be way too much with the barking and Jake's protective nature. Fortunately I found him a place on a farm that wanted a dog just like him so worked out for Jake. I am sticking with goldens but that is my bias. If you look after, train and socialize a GS they can be wonderful dogs too!
