Golden Retriever Puppy 4 months diagnosed Renal Dysplasia

PLEASE HELP US!!! Our 4 month old puppy has been wetting on himself some at night. We have mentioned this to the vet and just thought that he was young and would grow out of this. He has since had a UTI, and blood test showed his kidney values were a bit on the high side. Yesterday we took him to a specialist that performed an ultrasound and concluded that he has Renal Dysplasia. The doctor said he may live 2 years and there is nothing we can do. As you can imagine we are devastated! Our plan is to take him to NC State Veterinary Hospital for a 2nd opinion.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions. We have had many Goldens and never had this problem. We need help from you. Please! Our hearts are broken!
Thank you,
Katherine

My son’s Golden was diagnosed at a year old. We were told she may live 2-4 years. She’ll be 6 in September. I think the reason she’s made it this long is because my son is so strict with her diet, I’m talking nothing, nothing goes into her that she’s not supposed to eat except her special food. It’s been up and down at times with getting her to eat and in the last few months her numbers have gotten worse and she is now getting the saline to hydrate her about once a week. She still runs around and plays but she is starting to have bad days. I know we are fortunate to have her this long but it’s still hard. I’m sorry for you.

Thank you for taking the time to provide me the insight to your situation. That is great news that she is 6 years old. I have read about the challenges of food eating with the special diet. It will be a tough road if the 2nd opinion diagnosis is confirmed. And we plan to fight for his life.

So sorry to hear about your young boy. We’ve been long time followers of this forum but we have never posted. So not a lot of experience with posting.

I will tell you we went thru the very same thing 4 years ago with our last female pup. She came house broken - but within a few months later she started leaking a little at night. Everyone thought she was just young & it would correct. It took a couple lab work ups and ultrasounds to get the heartbreaking diagnosis of kidney disease. Diet and vigilant monitoring was the only initial recommendation for our girl.

We had her during the pandemic and vet care was unpredictable. We continued to manage as best we could and read everything we could get out hands on kd in puppies. We eventually went to a homemade diet prescribed by Nutritionist vet. We credit that diet with extending her life. She lived just short of her 4th birthday.

I would be happy to tell you what we learned & what helped her. UTI’s were a constant fight.
The initial assessments were grim but although her life was shortened she was one of the happiest dogs we’ve ever had. She lived a short but full & sweet life.
Please feel free to contact us as it would take a lot to explain the medical process and list of things that helped in detail on this site.

Only 4 years old, just can't imagine. It is tough losing one at 9, 10, really any age. But as a young pup, that is really heart breaking. Yes, I would love to hear more. We have a referral to NC State Vet Hospital for a 2nd opinion. I am hoping to get in by next week. They also have a nutrient program that I hope to meet with someone if the diagnosis is the same. What is the best way to reach you?

I am so sorry you are going through this. It truly is a terrible thing. But as others have said it is unlikely you will be able to do much other than give your pup the best time God gave him on this earth. I recently went through this in one of my litters. It did not appear until the pup was past weaning and because she was small I decided to hang onto her. Blood test after blood test, ultra sounds, xrays, vitamins, everything short of an MRI which we already knew the results would be RD. We (the Vet and I) were in touch with the IM specialist....she unfortunately died at 7.5 months, quietly at the feet of my friend who gave her a hospice home. I was told the same....up to 2 years, no surgery, no treatment. it SUCKS! I did have a very thorough necropsy performed. I had to know why...what happened. 34 years of breeding dogs and thank God I never saw this before...more thankful I had not let her go to a family to break their hearts. We all cried because Willow was the sweetest. You have my heart on this...I pray for you and this baby that there is some miracle for you.
