Golden Retriever Puppy 4 months diagnosed Renal Dysplasia

PLEASE HELP US!!! Our 4 month old puppy has been wetting on himself some at night. We have mentioned this to the vet and just thought that he was young and would grow out of this. He has since had a UTI, and blood test showed his kidney values were a bit on the high side. Yesterday we took him to a specialist that performed an ultrasound and concluded that he has Renal Dysplasia. The doctor said he may live 2 years and there is nothing we can do. As you can imagine we are devastated! Our plan is to take him to NC State Veterinary Hospital for a 2nd opinion.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions. We have had many Goldens and never had this problem. We need help from you. Please! Our hearts are broken!
Thank you,
Katherine

I'm so sorry. Unfortunately, the people who I know who have had Goldens with this problem, there are 2, would agree with the prognosis.
Contact your breeder and let him/her know. There's nothing they can do, either, but I'm sure they will want to know.

Thank you for your response however we will not give up without a fight! It is hard to understand that we can send a man to the moon but we can not save a puppy's life.
Technically, he could have a kidney transplant if you can find a donor dog. The cost is around $15,000-$20,000. He would need to be on immune suppressing drugs the rest of his life.
If it were my dog, I would be contacting vet schools and seeing if anyone has any clinical trials going for renal dysplasia and/or transplants. Sometimes there are things in the pipeline that we the general public don't know about.
Wishing you all the best.

Another thing you might consider is having your vet do a nutritional consult with someplace like Tufts. Here's just one example.

Thank you so much! I have been researching a special diet. I will definitely look into this.

I too would suggest starting a renal diet unless already started

Yes, agreed. I will be discussing with my vet on Monday a referral to NC State Veterinary Hospital for a 2nd opinion and discuss a special diet. I have been reading where certain foods need to be limited. Thank you.

We are praying for a miracle. Thank you.
I'm so sorry about your puppy - I don't have any useful advice except to say that I really hope your puppy's condition can be managed and he will lead a somewhat normal life in the long term... Wishing you all the best for some kind of successful outcome with the advice and options provided by the more experienced members here 🤞🏽 Please come back with updates about how the little guy does.. I really hope and pray he will come through this..

Katherine, please contact your breeder. And work between the breeder and the vet - if it's a good breeder.

Renal dysplasia is one of those things which whether there is a puppy contract or not, the breeder should be stepping up and supporting you. Provide write up from your vet and follow through with a specialist to decide on what lays ahead, how bad it is, etc.

Our first golden had a suspected case of renal dysplasia. Probably atypical because he did live about 6 years before he went into complete renal failure. And we squeaked out an extra 6 months after that.

With our golden he was always symptomatic, but we didn't know the symptoms were an issue. When they did an ultrasound, he had only one functioning legit kidney. His other was shriveled up like a walnut. Basically his remaining kidney held things together for a few years at least. And I know we were fortunate, because many cases including a recent one with a close friend - both kidneys are defective. :(

With my friend, she lost her golden at about 1.5 years (diagnosed around 6 months). Her breeder replaced the pup, no charge. There was no contract, but with a good breeder - this should not matter in cases like this.

My plan is to contact the breeder tomorrow. Also, wondering if this is the only pup with this condition although we will be getting a 2nd opinion from NC State Vet Hospital. Thank you for letting me know and responding.

Thank you for responding. If he truly has this condition after we have the 2nd opinion from NC State Vet Hospital, we will do everything possible to keep him healthy. He is a part of our family. He is perfect and we all love him so much.

Ugh. I am so sorry about this diagnosis. How sad for you all. I hope you can find some good vet support and maybe a good trial to join. And then go beat the odds. Best wishes to you and your pup.

My heart truly breaks to read about this. I say this because I can relate with what you are going through with hearing the devastating news. I waited almost 40 years of my life to finally get a puppy, it took so long mainly due to my living circumstances, and exactly a year after gotcha day, my dog was diagnosed with bilateral renal dysplasia. The only reason we found out then was because she was about to get spayed, but needed blood tests before and then an irregularity in that led to an ultrasound which led to the diagnosis.

I could not believe it, when our vet told me that her life expectancy was just another 1-2 years at the most. I researched as much as I could about this diagnosis to find out more about it, we changed her diet to Hills k/d, did as much as we could for her to live comfortably. Sadly, she passed away at only 2.5 years old. Towards the end, she lost so much weight, had not much energy, stopped eating and I could 100% see it in her eyes that it was time for me to let go. We had in-home euthanasia and she passed, peacefully.

After I found out about her diagnosis, I immediately contacted the breeder and they were very supportive and understanding. Ultimately, after providing reports from the medical specialist and vet, the breeder refunded me for the price I had paid for my pup and allowed me to keep her until she had passed away. I did not choose another puppy from the breeder.

I pray that your pup will live longer than mine and it’s likely, as it’s not both kidneys that are affected. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, I totally understand what you’re going through.

Thank you so much for sharing your devastating story. My heart breaks for you! We now have the referral to take him to NC State Animal Hospital for further testing. I am looking forward to having a trusted 2nd opinion however I am scared at the same time of the diagnosis. I contacted the breeder yesterday and she is refunding my money as well. If he does have Renal Dysplasia, I know we have an up hill battle. Like you, we will fight to the end.

So sorry for your loss. I know it had to be tough putting everything into words and reliving your tragedy. I really appreciate you sharing your story. 😢
