It has been incredibly cold here in WI this week. This morning when we woke up it was -6 with -25 windchill. We haven't been able to take Koda on a walk since Sunday afternoon - I feel soooo bad. I dont think it is safe though to be walking in this cold of conditions. Even when the temps are in the single digits I am afraid to have her out there too long. Am I being overprotective or is it better to keep them inside during weather like this?

We have been playing lots of games inside and she has been having her neighborhood doggy friend over every night to play and get some energy out but I can tell she misses her walks. I put my coat on and she runs to the back door just hoping we are going out...

Hoping to be back out on walks tomorrow or Thursday!

I've had Bella out on a few 2 mile walks in those conditions over the past few days, and it doesn't seem to bother her.

Yesterday morning, it was -36 below windchill. We cut that one to a mile.

We have still been doing walks or play time outside. It doesn't seem to phase Sage at all. We just don't go for as long of walks as we were, or spend as much time outside as we were. I think it's wise to be careful, but I also think it's ok to exercise as long as you are paying attention to whether or not they are getting cold or not. I personally think Sage can handle it better than me!!!!

It's similar here in Toronto. Sydney doesn't seem to care at all! I care though - my rule is I stay out with her until I can't feel my cheeks/ears. So far that's about 30 mins on average. So two 30 min walks/playtime per day + inside playtime for now.

I keep telling her summer will return soon. :)

Awful

I feel your pain! It was 1 degree in Chicago today and I believe the windchill is 25 below, also. Was just in the yard with Tucker and Tonka, not for LONG, believe me!!

Pixie actually loves it! I think she has a lot more energy with this weather. And the snow... she goes crazy about it

Me on the other hand... bbbrrrrr

My theory is if Yorkies are okay in an Alaskan winter to go outside to potty and have fun than a Golden is fine in the cold to play :D

Hank loves the cold, here in Ohio it was in the single digets last night/this morning, not as cold has Wisconsin but Hank went out as normal. Right now it's 6F windchill and he's out playing in the yard. As long as they're dry, moving, not ill, elderly or very young, I wouldn't worry.

Sounds good. Starting tomorrow she should have her walks back then! As long as it is above 0 degrees I will go for at least a short one but when there are negative 20 windchills that isn't good for us to even be out in! :)

Thanks for the input! :)

I worry more about the salt on the roads in winter than the temperature. Cookie and I do curtail our walk in extreme temperatures and if she seems uncomfortable then I don't force it, but we do go just about every day. The walks are supposed to be fun for both of us. :)

It was -9 this morning when we took our first walk. The dogs don't mind it.
Ky would stay outside all day in that temp if I let her (I don't) but Bentley can't take it as long as she can. After about 20 minutes he's ready to come in and warm up. Ky just rolls her eyes at him :D

It's been the same here in TC as well. We just layered up and covered and took Diesel for a 2 mile walk. It didn't seem to bother him in the least! He ran and played and rolled in the snow. I just watch for signs of discomfort from him I.e. lifting his paw off the ground when he stops and licking at his feet. I try not to keep him out in it for too long but he needs some kind of outlet at the same time otherwise we would both go nuts ?

chester seems to love the cold. i took him for a walk this morning and usually when the sun is bright he would run back inside with me but today i had to give him a pull and a treat of course for him to actually come inside. were getting ready for a cold storm apparently.

We're having a real cold spell this week but Zoe doesn't seem to notice. For some reason I thought it might be a good day for the dog park, the ground is frozen but not much snow or ice. A strong wind was blowing and only a very few hearty souls there. Zoe found a couple of friends to chase with and was having a great time till I just couldn't stand the cold anymore.

Yea, we haven't missed walks yet from the cold but with -30 degree windchills this morning I just didnt feel that was safe for either of us. If it is single digits and abvoe I will go and now I know that is normal! :)

Feeling great! Will be 20 weeks this week (officially halfway) but still enjoying this 2nd trimester where I feel more like myself than I had in months! :) It's going good - not big enough to be uncomfortable but finally showing enough where I dont look like I am just stacking on some pounds! :) We find out next Thursday what we are having too - I am soo excited for that! :) Thanks for asking!!!
