We're preparing to bring home our puppy next month and I'm looking for a freestanding gate to fairly wide doorway. I'm worried about getting one that he won't be able to knock over if he jumps or even just runs into it while chasing a toy. I see a range of prices (this one for example seems affordable -- but would it be sturdy enough? or is its price tag an indication that it wouldn't hold up against a rambunctious pup?) Advice on a good sturdy one?

I had this one. It was easy because I could step over it, but my pup never challenged it. It needed to block the way to my stairs, but I couldn't put in an installed gate because of the banister on one side. It worked great. It was there from the day she came home, so it was tall to her at 8 weeks old, so maybe that's why she just never thought to try to go over it. (I was also always with her to supervise, so she just never had the option).

This is really true. I have had two Goldens who just automatically respected gates, even when they easily could have jumped them. My first dog, I kept her out of the guest room with a 6-inch high piece of wood (a plank from a book shelf) placed across the doorway. I haven't used baby gates for years now with my current dog (she is nearly 8 years old), but if I have a worker in the house, I can easily just prop up the baby gate again, and Shala respects it, even though she could jump it easily, or just knock it over.
