Read this on a newsletter I get. This is a copy of the letter from Natural Balance to a customer.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Natural Balance regarding the Potato & Duck Formula. Please know that we have implemented a recent change to this formula. As Natural Balance continues to grow, we have found it increasingly difficult to obtain the quality and quantity of duck meal from the United States that our rigorous standards require. In order to address this issue before supply becomes a problem, Natural Balance has decided to add more fresh duck and potato protein to the Potato & Duck formula. We have found this adjustment enhances the palatability and performance of the product, but may lighten the kibble color. We have been feeding this formula for the last six months to many of our own Natural Balance pets and it has produced exceptional results. A very small percentage of dogs with sensitive stomachs may experience a temporary digestive upset with the formulation change to the Potato & Duck Formula. For this limited number of dogs, we recommend feeding smaller, more frequent meals, combined with the old formula (if available), over a 5 to 7 day period to adjust to the new formula. You may also try any of our other LID formulas, which include the Sweet Potato & Fish, Sweet Potato &Venison, or the Lamb & Brown Rice. Have a good day.

Sincerely,
Kristi Choy, B.S. Animal Nutrition
Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.

This is the new ingredient list:

A couple thoughts on this change. First, according to the newsletter the packaging no longer says "Made in the USA", but it now says " Manafactured for" a company in the USA.

Second, Potatoes are now their #1 ingredient and they have replaced Duck meal with Duck. Since the duck will move down a few spots once the food is cooked, the top 2 ingredients are now potato and potato protein. So dogs on this food will now be digesting quite a bit of potato, more so than they were used to.

OY....... another way to cheapen their food ( for them ). More meat, less meal = less meat protein, since meal is a concentrated form of meat ( water removed ). When just "duck" is listed, that is inclusive of water which is a major percentage. Glad this isn't my food.

Natural Balance (fish and sweet potato) is the food that made my Gunner itch like crazy, lose his hair and weight in an amazing short period of time. As soon as I got him back on his Nature's Variety, his coat came in glorious and is now thick and luxurious. He gained back the weight he had lost and is his old self.
I will never change my boys food again unless I have no other choice.(like they go out of business.)

I switched to this food early this year...the protein drop from Canidae to NB made for two lazy GR's at my house:(. Wonder what the protein % will be now? I can't see potato making up the difference twix meal and fresh duck.

I went back to Canidae kibble (dragging my feet a little) but the girls thrive on it.
