I am sorry to hear about your experience with HealthyPaws.

We just lost our boy Luca this past March, who would have been 8 years old come July.

We had Healthypaws from moment we got him (8 weeks, though I think there may have been a waiting period initially).

Luca had problems from the day we got him; lots of Giardia early on, as well as allergies. Allergies continued throughout his life (he was on Apoquel throughout his life).

He had been cleared for hip dysplasia, but then was diagnosed years later, as his hips had begun degenerating, and quickly. The vet started doing bi-weekly injections to slow the deterioration of his hips.

Healthy Paws covered everything from day 1, and never fought us on anything.

Premiums had gone up significantly year over year, and during Luca's final ~2 years, the monthly premium was $175, and then went up to $205.

Once Luca had passed (hemangiosarcoma), Healthy Paws had called us after we put in the final invoice. I know this stuff is nearly automated, but CSR was so kind and it meant so much to my wife and I.

I'm still not over our loss of Luca - but looking back, I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about Healthy Paws. We had the 90% coverage plan mind you, and it required us to pay all invoices ourselves, and then we would be reimbursed from HP - I'm not sure if this has changed, as OP mentions the vet submitting the invoices.

I did question whether or not Healthy Paws was worth it from a financial standpoint, and I called them up to go over the all the numbers. They walked me through everything, and I had created a nice xls to go over the total premiums paid, the total reimbursements, and the total OOP.

For the ~8 years we had Healthy Paws, we were reimbursed just over $13,000, and the total premium paid was just under $12,000. Our OOP expense (not covered) was still expensive, but that being said, overall we had saved just over $1,000.

$1,000 is not a significant savings over 8 years - but its a savings nonetheless.

Additionally, Luca never had any significant surgery, despite having a lifelong Apoquel script, and a couple of years of bi-weekly injections.

Had Luca ever needed a major surgery, it likely would've made a substantial difference, but you'd have to take into consideration the adjustment of future premiums, and how many months/years of those you'd be paying.

We have begun our search on adding a new golden to our family, and I feel confident that we will be a HealthyPaws customer once again.
