I was reading up on male vs female dogs and everything that I read says that males are more loving and puppy like, while females is more independent and cat like. I also read that males can be harder to train since they don't mature as fast as their sisters. I was just wondering what you guys have to say on this thought. I am getting my first boy on january 4, as they were just born a couple days ago. I was just wondering what everyone else thinks on gender differences.

It honestly depends on the dog. My girl is super needy and affectionate. Not cat like at all. She's not very cuddly on the couch (I hear boys are more inclined to this), but she constantly wants to be getting attention, being rubbed and patted. She is not independent at all lol. Advantage of a female is that they are a lot smaller than males.

It really depends on the individual dog. My girls is the biggest snuggle bug. Both of my boys are just as sweet but they don't really like to to cuddle as much. My younger boy is very independent, but my girl is more velcro. None of them are at all cat like.

ya, I have heard that as well. I had a female golden as a young child but didn't do much with her so I wouldn't know.

Okay, thanks for the feedback. Originally I really wanted a female but when the puppies were born I was 4th in line to pick and both females were already chosen. I am now very happy with a male! Im sure both make wonderful dogs

They do all make wonderful dogs. Goldens are amazing

My most recent male puppy was not loving, at all. He was aloof and independent, and wouldn't give me the time of day. I was very distressed, since my last boy was a total love bug. He's now very affectionate at 11 mos. old (he just walked up and licked my calf as I was writing this ), but still very independent. He is, and always has been, incredibly easy to train, very biddable, and always pays close attention to me.

I'll tell you what, though, I am totally, head over heels in love with this boy. And every boy I've had has been a joyous ball of lovable energy.

I've had Goldens for 45 years.

I've wondered about this too. We want a female. We are 4th in line but the other 3 want males. But since Our pup isn't born yet there's no way to know if the litter will be mixed or all one gender and the breeder did ask if a female wasnt available are we interested in a male. We said yes bcs from what I can see, those who've had only females love females. This who've had only males love males. Those who've had both love both

I heard the same thing about males vs females and I ended up getting a male dog and where some of what you've heard is true, some of it isn't...for me at least. My boy is pretty rambunctious and nutty, which I have heard male dogs are. He is easily trainable though. I had heard that male dogs are more affectionate and he is affectionate and wants to be pet all the time, but he wont come on the couch or bed to cuddle, only to try to steal things or wake us up. He is getting more affectionate as he gets older though and cuddles for longer periods of time. I had heard that males are kind of doofussy and he is definitely that! I think if we were to get a second dog we would get a female to balance it out.

But regardless, I don't think you can go wrong. Either gender is great and goldens are wonderful dogs!

I agree, it depends on the dog. We had a male golden when I was young that was very independent and curious. The next golden we got was also a male, but he always wanted to be with us, no matter what we were doing. As far as hunting over them, I've seen males who were very difficult, and I've seen females who would literally run themselves into the ground for you, if you would have let them.

I agree that it is dependent on the individual dog, but I am totally biased in favor of boys. I've worked around dogs for years and with a few rare exceptions, my favorites have always been boys. I find them generally to be more affectionate and loving. Perhaps talking to the breeder about the personality traits you hope for your dog to have would be beneficial?

I am on my 3rd female, and have only had 1 male. I don't think you can go wrong, male or female. I really can't say one has been more affectionate, cuddly, ect, then the others. They have all been individuals, yet wonderful in that they are goldens!

In our Golden lifetime, we have had 3 boys and 1 girl. In our case the old stories seem to be true in that the boys have always been our shadow, very loving, needy and goofy. Our girl is very independent, very headstrong, yet she too is very loving, but while on walks, she is the one I am constantly calling (she has disappeared into the grass), she is the first to run to the pond and become a totally messy mud dog. She keeps me on my toes and laughing and does wonderfully at our training class, picks up things very quickly.

I am still partial to the boys, but sure am enjoying my girl. I think your breeder will be able to determine the best fit, but either boy or girl..think you will be overjoyed!

I've experienced both, Maggie was more independent but I wouldn't say aloof. Hank is a true velcro dog. Both were/are great companions.
