Eye Irritation - Help

1454 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  mybuddy
I'll search the forum for answers but thought I'd start here. Our pup has something wrong with an eye. He closes it with the other open and when he opens it, it is like a red film over it or like an extra eye lid. It is hard to discribe. I took him to the after hours clinic and it was packed so I took him to the pet store and a worker suggested a eye rinse solution for dogs.

It just started about 4pm today. He doesn't try itching it with his paw but you can tell it isn't normal, looks irritated. Any suggestions?

awww poor guy....I would take him to the vet
I'd see a vet. Don't want to mess with eye issues.
Thanks for your reply. I tried "search" for eye irration but nothing came up. I didn't know if it was allergies?...I will take him to the vet but I didn't know if it was a urget vet visit situation. My vet doesn't have after hours but their message machine gave a place that is far from here that I went to earlier and they were packed; I didn't want to stay in that neighborhood after dark. He isn't in pain. It is irritated though.
Would you go back to the urgent after hours vet? I want to make sure that he's okay.
Personally, I would go back. I wouldn't want to take the chance that perhaps he has a foreign body in there or that something is scratching his cornea.

Any chance it could be a cherry eye? when you said "its like a red film over it or an extra eye lid" thats what i thought of first. hope he feels better soon
Have you tried OTC eye drops for a lubricant? Flushing the eye with an eyewash? I'd have him seen as soon as possible also. Can't be too careful where the eyes are concerned.
I would go back. The pup is probably in a lot of discomfort - think about how it feels to have an eyelash in your eye.

Don't mess... get to a vet. Eye issues are not something to guess at. It could be conjuntivitis, it could be an injury...
I just got back from the 24 hour vet clinic. They said he is fine. Yesterday he was playing with a toy and he yelped. I jumped to see what was wrong and his eye was watery, he poked himself but it stopped watering right away and all seemed fine. It is irriated from that they said tonight.

I was worried like heck!!
HAHAHA...

Once when Buddy was younger...( I was very over protective...a bit obsessive..anyway...)

I woke up and Buddy had the same thing you described going on with his eye. I was very green and immediately thought his eye fell out. Honestly, there was no ball in there that I could see! I called into work and told them I wouldnt be in, rushed him to the vet and told them that Buddy's eye fell out. They knew me by then so of course just humored me....they checked it over and told me that he had a blade of grass in there and told me about the 3rd lid. Never heard of that before. hahahahaha...he got some drops and his eye came back.

See....some people worry even more than you do!
