Emergency Vets in Kentucky

274 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Aly2015
Hello! I will be traveling to the Wellington, KY area (Daniel Boone forest) for some hiking and camping with my golden in the near future. I would like to know of the closest emergency vet just in case anything was to happen on our trip. I’m having a difficult time finding anything less than 2.5 hours away. If anyone knows of this area or lives close by who can help, I would really appreciate it! It would give me a lot of peace of mind to have an emergency vet I could go to if needed, though hopefully will be completely unneeded!

I don't know of any, but before traveling I call a couple of non-emergency vets in the area and ask who they might recommend. A surprising number of them will come into their office in the case of an emergency in rural areas.
Hope that helps.

I'm looking at Google Maps and it says Wellington is just outside of Louisville. Any chance you mean Winchester? Definitely check Winchester. It's the biggest city in the area. I know that area fairly well. Chances are, you won't find an emergency vet nearby. Other towns to check would be Slade, Campton, and Jackson. It's a beautiful area, but it's also a very poor area. Expensive emergency vets just aren't a thing for them.
I doubt Campton or anywhere in Wolfe County would have an ER- and may not have a vet at all.. it used to be the poorest county in the US. Winchester is your best bet.

I agree with you there. I was naming off the larger of the tiny towns in the area because who knows. I'm kind of surprised anyone else knows the area, honestly.
When we went to the Outer Banks 2 years ago, I just called a vet local to where our beach rental was and asked them which was the closest 24 hour vet that serviced the area and then saved it in my phone in case we needed it.

I know it because my parents started the clinic /small hospital in Campton when I was but a babe. .. lived there til I was 4 or so. It was the only drug store for miles and miles, and the only place to get health care for just as far. And I've driven through a time or two since, amazed they stood it as long as they did...

Interesting! My father in law is from there and has a bunch of land in the area still.

I see what you mean! I wonder if there are two Wellingtons? When I look up our specific address, which says it is in Wellington, it’s like 3 hours from Louisville. But when I just put in Wellington KY it says 15 minutes 🤦‍♀️

I did find one emergency vet that is an an hour and 20 minutes away. Not ideal. But if there is something serious enough for me to want to get in, I at least have a place to start driving to

Thank you everyone for the help! I’ll try to look at a few more surrounding areas, but it does not seem like there are many options unfortunately.
