Our 2-year-old male Jack has always gone pee and poop in the grass with no problems, but for some reason the past few weeks, he's occasionally hesitant to come off the steps or the driveway concrete to do his business. I have to coax him down or walk away so he follows. Sometimes he just steps off the edge of the concrete into the grass to go. He's also peeing in our playground area, which is chipped rubber, and pooped there once, which he's never done. Not sure if it's a texture thing with the grass or what's going on. It's not all the time, but enough to be puzzling.

Grass allergy? Red paws or lots of licking? Our pollen levels are so high....

Bosn'sMom: We had a granular fertilizer put down a week ago, and we try to keep him off the grass for 24 hours, but we've had applications before and he hasn't changed behavior.

BajaOklahoma: It is allergy season here, too. We've switched him from TOTW food to Natural Balance for the past 2 months per our vet's direction because he had red paws consistently, and it has cleared up his paws, although not completely. Maybe he's smarter than we think about what bugs him. :)

Try rinsing his paws off every time he comes inside. We actually had a tub of water by the back door, with some towels to dry Bennett's feet off. He quickly learned that he had to put his feet in the water before coming further into the house.
We also wiped him down with a damp cloth to remove the pollen. No biggie.
