The main place I walk Brooks is on a sidewalk, but the edges are lined with huge fire ant mounds. If you disturb their mound, they come BOILING out and start biting immediately.
Today Brooks stepped on one and instantly they were all over his leg. I tried to brush them off and they were biting my hand and when they dropped on the sidewalk, they climbed on my foot and bit that.

I HATE FIRE ANTS

Ugh, me too!! We don't have them here THANK GOD... but I got bitten up when I was in Texas and they were awful!! I was so worried the dogs would get bitten, but I managed to distract the ants enough myself

Hope your legs and foot are ok.. those things itch so bad!! Did Brooks get bitten?

I think I got them off him before they could get through the fur. Once before, a friend was driving along and he and I stepped off the sidewalk to talk with her, not realizing we were in a mound. He got so many bites that I had to take him to the vet because he kept licking and licking the bites.

I very purposely don't live in a place that has fire ants, as I was hospitalized from fire ant bites as a child and nearly died. When I go to Florida to visit my folks, I wear white rubber boots when gardening so I can see them if they start climbing since the Louisiana doc said I would die if bitten again. I would be horrified if fire ants got on my dog!!!!

I HATE FIRE ANTS! Gus used to always stop on a walk to poop in the same spot, and he wasn't going to let a giant fire ant mound stand in his way! He walked right into it, and like Cheryl said, they just came boiling out (that is the perfect visual for it!). I was freeeeaking out as I'm allergic to them, but luckily it was also pouring rain, so I was just wiping them off his leg with my hand and then washing my hand in the little river that had formed along the curb. I didn't get bit amazingly enough. Sometimes when Gus comes inside after laying in the backyard, I'll find dead ones in his fur. I haven't ever noticed him acting like he's been bitten though.

We have the same problem here with fire ants. Merlin likes to walk along the top of the curb right where they make their mounds. I make sure we keep moving right along with no stops in this area. I hate them too. Nasty little buggers.

We were walking the golf course path earlier this year when merl decided he needed to stop and scratch and plunked his butt right down on top of a mound before I could stop him. I screamed and dragged him off it so fast....luckily he didn't get a bite, but I was way more careful after that.
