Copley - Sudden Death Due to Hemangiosarcoma

Hello,

I joined this forum years ago when we first brought home our puppy, Copley, and now I'm back for support after we made the hardest decision we have ever made.

Yesterday, we had to make the unthinkable decision to put our beloved Copley to sleep at age 9.5. He was completely acting like himself until Saturday evening, when he was a bit lethargic after doing zoomies. We initially chalked it up to his arthritis, but on Sunday morning he refused his breakfast so we brought him to the emergency vet to check for a blockage.

When we got to the vet, he perked up because he got attention and chicken, and the vet was initially going to send us home with pain meds for the arthritis. I asked for more testing because he was panting more than normal and just seemed off. She did an ultrasound and found large masses on his spleen and liver, as well as fluid all around his spleen. She pulled some fluid out and it was blood.

From there, everything is a blur. They put us into a private room and recommended humane euthanasia. My parents came to be with our young kids and my husband and I made the decision to let Copley go peacefully while he was still wagging his tail. It was excruciating to make this decision while he was still up and walking around, wagging his tail, and asking for pets and treats from everyone. We held him and told him we loved him while he went to sleep. I hope beyond hope that we made the right decision to avoid suffering but I still have a seed of doubt that we could have done things differently and had more time with him.

Please keep us and Copley in your thoughts today. He was our perfect golden boy and we will miss him forever.

I'm so sorry. Don't second guess yourself. If he had reached the inappetence stage, he did not have long and your decision was the kindest for him.
He was a lovely boy-

Thank you. You may not remember, but I spoke with you when we first got Copley from Grand Bay Goldens. He had some of your beautiful dogs in his pedigree.

Better a day too soon than a day too late. With his diagnosis it was only a matter of time, don't second-guess sparing him anymore pain.

I’m so terribly sorry. I also want to commend you for knowing him so well that you knew there was more to the story, and for asking them to look further. You did a wonderful job, being his advocate. That happened so fast, I’m sure you are still in shock. I wish you peace and happy memories on the other side of the pain.

So sorry. It feels so awful to have to make a quick decision like that. It hurts so much. I’m grateful that Copley lived well right up to the last.

I’m pretty sure my last dog, a Lab, had that. His energy level had gone down to normal dog level and we thought he was just acting his age of 11. Vet thought he had arthritis, I didn’t think so. Anyway she prescribed NSAID and took a blood sample. He had wasting of his rear leg muscles and was quite anemic. We didn’t feel that diagnosing him would be helpful if we didn’t want to subject him to intensive treatments. One morning he was unable to stand up and we knew it was time.

I believe this with all my heart. If you had some kind of guarantee that you could take him home and get another month of pain-free, quality days for him, I'd say go for it. But the ultra sound didn't show that scenario. Your boy had a couple more hours or a couple more days but not a couple of more months. No one who read your thread would think for a second that you and your husband didn't do what you felt was best for your beloved boy. Having small children and a large dog means that you could easily have been caught at home with your boy crashing and no one to help get him to an emergency vet. Your children didn't need to remember their dog that way and that wasn't the end that I would choose for my dog. Please allow yourself some grace to grieve Copley, he deserves it and so do you.

My condolences on the loss of your beautiful boy. It's just so hard, I lost my first Golden in a very similar way. I'm so sorry for your heartbreak.

I am so sorry. I had to put a small dog down one time when she still seemed lively but it was to spare future suffering. It does make you second guess but I know it was the right thing to do and even more so in your case because hemangiosarcoma is brutal. Living with the memories of the final minutes takes some mental and emotional processing but then try to focus your thoughts on happy memories and not the final minutes as much as you can. I can tell Copley was well loved and a valued family member and that's all they ask of us.

I'm sorry for your loss of Copley. He looks very handsome in his photo. We're going through the same thing at our house right now as we lost our girl on Sunday. I agree with the others here that suggest focusing on good memories and photos to help you through this. If it helps to write them or share them here, please feel free to do that as well.

Thank you, and I'm so sorry for your loss as well. Our goldens are knit so tightly in the fabric of our everyday lives. I still find myself breaking off a piece of my banana for him. My early morning walks with him were my moment of peace before a busy day with kids and work. Our entire neighborhood knew him and loved him. He never met a stranger, and leaned on the legs of everyone who stopped to pet him. I just don't feel like myself without him.

Thank you for saying this. my husband and I have been repeating it. Sparing him pain was the best thing we could do. We were able to speak with our regular vet and she completely agreed with our decision.
