It was around 4:00 am last night, and me and my fiancee were sound asleep. All of a sudden, Chloe starts crying like I've NEVER heard a dog cry before. I'm trying to think of something that would make a dog cry this much, but I can't even think of anything that bad. Needless to say, me and my fiancee jumped up, pulled her out of her crate, and gave her a ridiculous amount of love. She was fine, and has been ever since. No signs of injury.

I mean, she's cried to get out of the crate numerous times. I know what her cry sounds like, even when she REALLY wants out. This was that multiplied by a thousand!

What happened?!

What happened is she got your attention and you let her out of the crate and loved her up. My guess is that the same thing will happen again tonight. I have one major rule with puppies - they never, ever, ever get let out of their crates when they are making noise. I manage them well enough to know when and if they have to relieve themselves - even boarding dogs here won't ever be released from a crate if they are barking, whining or crying. It usually gets worse before it gets better (extinction behavior).

Good luck!

I would completely agree with you here, but...

I just can't believe the noises she made last night were simply to get out of the crate. She's slept in the crate next to us everynight for 8 weeks now, and I know her whimpering. She knows she has to be calm or she isn't getting out. If she whimpers at night, all we have to do is say her name and she quiets down.

This was NOT the same thing.

Hmm. What kind of crate do you have? Is it a plastic one or a metal wire kind? Maybe a nail got stuck or fur got snagged in a screw? I can't think of much else that would make a puppy scream like that aside from being hurt. Do you have a cat or something that might have scratched her through the kennel? (its a long shot I know, i'm just trying to help!!)

I hope she is ok!

I was also wondering if she was awake when the whining started. Mad has never whined or cried much, in fact practically never, but boy does she whine and wimper loudly in her sleep.
Hmm..I don't know, because we were sleeping when she started whimpering and then we went into panic mode. Haha. She did seem otu of it, maybe she was sleeping.

Our crate is the metal kind with the plastic bottom. She didn't seem hurt afterwards, but I don't know. As for the cats, we have two, and they just stare at her. They won't even swipe at her if she lunges for them, they are wussies. Haha

Mine had an episode like that one night. The only things I could think of were a) muscle cramp, or b) nightmare. But he's an older guy, yours looks like a puppy.
Hope you don't have any repeat episodes.

Our pup did that a while ago! I peeked in with the flashlight, and she looked asleep, so I left her alone. Our old dog, a shepherd/lab/pit mix (he was our devil dog!) used to howl only in his sleep. He would sound like he was dyyyyyyyyyying...... Hope you have a sleepful night tonight!

She could have gotten her teeth caught in the crate wires. I know when our grooming dogs have had that happen, it's ear piercing. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, you never forget it. :( They usually get free before we get to them, but, let me tell you, everyone in my shop runs to them immediately.

When our Jack was a pup yet he would let out some shrieking howls while in his crate. One day we saw what happened...he was sprawled out in the crate and his foot got stuck in the side. When he moved it hurt and let out a yelp, then he got scared and tried to pull it out too quickly which made it hurt more and he squealed more. We ended up strapping cardboard to the outside of the sides of the crate so his little tosey-toes wouldn't get caught again.

Sounds to me like she was dreaming out loud. Ike does this and can make your skin crawl with the whines, cries, yelps, and howls that can come out of a sleeping dog. He also twitches, paddles, and scratches...looks like he's playing fiercely or fighting fiercely. I'd love to see what he dreams!

Ellie was (and is) quite the drama queen. I think I know what you are talking about re: those puppy screams. It is such a horrible sound. Ellie took a misstep when she was about 10 weeks old and screamed like she was dying. We were about to take her to the emergency vet, but it turned out she was fine.

Whatever it was, I'm glad your pup is alright.

Is it possible they were just sleep noises?? Dillon makes the funniest noises when he sleeps sometimes... yelps, growls, barks, yips, you name it. They can be quite loud too.

Hope there's no repeat performance tonite and all is back to normal!
