Its 12 years today I lost my first Charlie another dog that tugged at my heart.
She was my first rescue Golden she really was a handful very bad tempered and she was on death row and the rescue knew I had lost a dog of similar temperament a few months ago so they asked me if I would give her a try.
I still think of her nearly every day but now fond memory's of the good times we had together,

We went to get her and we rushed to the kennels as she was due to be PTS that day I am pleased to say we got there in time.

They said she is food aggressive she can't have toys either as they make her bad tempered as well.
They said we could take her on a weeks trail I said no we take her for good there will be no going back for her.
When they opened her kennel she run out round and round the field like the joys of spring she briefly said hello to us and our other dog then jumped in our car and would not get out so that was how we got Charlie.

One of the first things I did when I got her home was give her a toy as my other dog had toys everywhere and guess what she was fine.

Charlie was 6 years old and had been pushed out when a baby came along the owner was frightened of her her coat was in a bad state as he was afraid to brush her.
It took me two years of hard work and getting bitten to win her over what keep me going was she was so good with my other dog Tess a little Jack Russell she would look after Tess if another dog came near Tess barking or growling Charlie would chase them off.
I could trust Charlie 100% in the end but she still did like like men very much my Ray had to be a bit careful with her.

She turned out a dog in a million we took her everywhere with us and Tess loved her so much but sadly we lost her very suddenly she was nearly 13 years old we had been on holiday just done a 10 mile walk with her and some how she had picked up hepatitis it all happened so quick we had to rush home and get her to the vets but it was to late I stayed with her right to the end held her in my arms and told her how much I loved her.
After we lost her that was the first time I had seen a dog grieve my poor little Tess missed her so much just like us.
Play hard at the bridge Charlie with my other girls we will meet again one day.

The photo's are not very good as no digital camera in those days.

sounds like Charlie had waited all her life for you to come and collect her.
Happy memories !!!

We have many happy memories of all the long walks we used to do and as you can see she would climb over the stiles more like a human and if she was hot she would just climb in a trough :D and i can't forget her as i still have the scar on my thumb where she very first bit me.
But it does annoy me when dogs get pushed out when children come along.
Today is a tough day for you Maggie (and Ray), but i feel sure that Charlie will be telling any furry ones that will listen about the day she found her forever home. Somethings are just meant to be, and it was certainly Charlie 1's destiny to find you both. I agree that it is so sad when dogs are just shoved to one side because of children, or any other flimsy excuse (that's how we got Ralph).

Run Free Charlie , play with your friends and sleep softly
Thanks Jan its just some Goldens get to your heart a bit more than they should i think it was because she was such a challange that the bond was so strong.
Thanks for posting your story and how you changed Charlie's life. Hold your memories close today as you remember Charlie.
Tha anniversaries are so hard but remembering the good times makes it alittle easier. Charlie sounds like she loved her life with you and knew from minute one you were her family. My heart goes out to you on this day.
