Hey Everyone,
This is my first time getting a pet. I have been doing online research for a while and set up a lifestyle that can accomodate a pup. I have contacted several breeders in California and Oregon. I haven't received many replies.

One option I have is Nancy Chadwick's Golden Retrievers.

I have also got a reply from whiskey creek Golden retrievers. Whiskey Creek Goldens - home
They have none available but I am on a waiting list for a spring litter in 2021 - this is a tentative litter (she mentioned that it all depends on the girls)

I would appreciate any help on how to navigate

Chadwick's is not somewhere I would want a puppy from. The dogs don't have cardiologist heart clearances and they should be having their eyes checked every year. Not happening. Goldens are prone to a couple of different eye issues that are not generally going to be caught by a regular vet check - they need a yearly exam because the problems aren't easily seen and the dog can't tell you that his eyes hurt - it gets progressively worse and the dog can be in extreme pain and go blind and need to have an eye removed and while there is no cure, it can be treated if caught early enough to give the dog a chance at retaining sight. There appears to be a hereditary component that isn't understood yet - until then it is incredibly important that Goldens have yearly eye exams by an board certified veterinary eye specialist. Pets should have it done but breeding dogs should definitely have it done and it isn't being registered by this breeder. You could ask about it but the heart clearance is a deal killer for me. No excuse for not having the cardiologist clearance. I'd also want to know how the puppies are raised - how do the breeding dogs live? What kind of quality of life would you be supporting if you gave this breeder your money? These are things you would want to be sure handing over your money. Here are some previous threads discussing this breeder:

The Whiskey Creek breeder has also had some threads here before, you'd want to read over those yourself and see what you think. I'm not familiar with her. Ask about how the puppies are raised and socialized - in a house? the whole 8 weeks? How many litters at once? Again, ask how the dogs are living, is the breeder doing anything with the dogs or do they just live outdoors in kennels making puppies? Ask about eye clearances - some breeders do them but don't send them in - you'll need to know the parents of your puppy to check on it but she should be able to provide that.
This is a hard world to navigate, do all the reading you can - the more educated you are about it, the less likely you are to be taken advantage of.

I’m also on the waiting list for 2021 Whiskey Creek puppy. I’m following this thread to see what others have to say about Christa’s program. I’ve seen some absolutely gorgeous dogs come from her, so I’m hopeful that it will work out 🤞🏻
