Copper has a growth on the right side of his head. It has been diagnosed as an adenoma both by his regular vet and oncologist. He has had it for almost 2 years.

It was open, "deflated" and oozing a nasty fluid this morning. I think he ripped it open while playing in the woods yesterday or else it just ruptured.

I thought adenomas were benign masses and not fluid filled. Coincidentally, the boil on the other side of his head is open and draining this morning as well.:yuck:

I cleaned both areas and started him back on the same dose of antibiotics he was prescribed by his oncologist for various infected growths last November. She gave me an extra prescription for just this reason.

Any ideas on this? If it desn't improve in a day or so, I will schedule another trip to the specialist. Did I completely misunderstand what an adenoma is or is this something different? Or is it an adenoma that got infected somehow?????

I had this one and two others checked out two weeks ago. the vet thought it looked okay then.

Barkley has had several growths on his body rupture and ooze stuff. When later biopsied they were all benign but not lipomas. I am not certain but I think they came back as an adenoma, and if that is the case, yes they can rupture. I was told that anytime something like Barkley had ruptured I should see the vet for possible infection and antibiotics.

I know that adenocarcinomas can rupture because the vets warned us about that when they discovered Barkley's anal growth.

POOR COPPER!

Copper does not seem to mind at all that he is oozing on both sides of his head.:yuck::)

I cleaned them this morning and will clean them again tonight and I also started him back on antibiotics. I believe we had hit about a record 4 weeks or so without antibiotics. Sigh.

If they aren't better in a couple of days and certainly if they get worse, we'll have them checked by his oncologist. I am not sure which of his 3 prescribed antibiotics:) worked for his last skin/lump/growth flare up last November. I restarted the 500mg cephalexin 2ce a day.

It would be great if both those things healed up and actually went away! For the last 1.5 years or so I have had to be very careful where I place my kisses on his lovely head. it was rather icky if I got the wrong spot.

oh, poor Copper. I think he's just being sympathic to his alter-ego, Toby. Can't have just one of the two causing vet bills, can we??
I know you know this, but keep him on the antibiotics a LONG time, at least double what they would prescribe for dogs who aren't missing body parts!
Give the big guy a hug from me and a big woof from the Chicago gang!

I can sympathize with you, one of Tuckers sebaceous cysts has been leaking a little every day for months now. He's been on antibiotics (cephalexin) for it a couple times. The other cyst that healed turned into a adenoma that is scabbed over. He also has a small adenoma on the side of his face, but that appears to not be filled with stuff. I wish our dogs would stop leaking!
