I would like to start reading up before our pup comes home (yes, I have some time on my hands... ). Can anyone recommend some of their favorite books? Anything having to do with Golden Retrievers, puppy care, dog training, etc...
I just read "A tail of two species" and really liked it. Lot of good insight into how dogs learn. I'm also reading "The other end of the leash", both are by the same author and cover the same information, the other end of the leash is much more technical though.
Best book I found by far- Ian Dunbar's Before and After Getting your Puppy. Feeding Tucker from kongs when he was little really helped with his chewing. He now picks up either a kong or nylabone when he wants to chew. He also stresses the importance of socialization.
I picked up at our breeders recommendations, "Mother knows Best" & "Golden Retreivers for Dummies" I have only read parts so far. I also got the 101 dog tricks which I like.
A clear, compassionate guide for raising a puppy, illustrated with more then 80 photographs explains the stages of puppy development, how to communicate, and how to deal with common problems like chewing, jumping up and paper training. The hardcover book is 274 pages.
Matthew Margolis and Mordecai Segal wrote a book called "Golden Years" about golden retrievers. I really liked that but it is an older book (I read it when Selka was a puppy ten years ago) In fact, I like all Matthew Margolis's dog books and tapes.
