Hi, I’m new to this community!
My golden is 8 yrs old. As a puppy, he was especially attached to a member of the household who moved out when he was about 1 yr old. That one person did almost all the dog care. I have since stepped up and have been taking care of him ever since, but he was never the same after that, not recovering for years. He seems disconnected and unhappy. We have been doing better and bonding more (playing, cuddling, etc.) but he is still rather emotionally glazed over. Any tips on further bonding or ways to help a dog with depression?

Could you take him to some kind of training class like Canine Good Citizen, nose work, intro to Agility. Doing a class together helps with boredom and with bonding. Dogs do mourn when losing people or other dogs they were close to but 7years seems like a really long time for him to be sad.

yeah he kind of imprinted on that one person and no one stepped in to be his special person right away. He’s a very one-person kind of dog
