So in it's eternal wisdom the city of Toronto has decided to attempt banning owners from walking their dogs along the beach. Why are they doing this? To improve the water quality of Lake Ontario. Is it just me or does that make no sense? How is keeping my dog out of the water going to improve water quality? I bet kids pee in the water more than the dogs do. Apparently they are still going to have off leash areas but who knows how long that will last because ummm if they are still going into the water what difference does it make if it is in the off leash area or one foot to the left or right of it??? Honestly there are far more important issues such as the annoying geese and how much they poo. Oh and they might use special dogs to help get rid of those geese. I wonder if they will get a $300 ticket if caught. Or maybe how to get rid of the coyote that is roaming around in the beaches and eating small dogs and cats.

Honestly I just don't get it .

I do get it... I just saw a special on tv that talked about EColi in the water at some beaches because of animal waste. I think it's a bigger problem than we realize. Many areas had to be closed due to the infected water. As much as I love my dog, I would not want him to contribute to a human health hazard.

I can not answer your questions.. but I do feel your pain. We live on the coast of Florida.. beautiful beaches all along the east side of our county.. So many are "owned" by condos.. no one else is allowed in.. The few public beaches are not dog friendly. A year ago they finally opened a beach where our dogs can run off leash... they even supply poop bags. :D One day we were there and an elderly " gentleman" was walking the shore line. My 2 ran up to him for luvins.. not jumping.. he started screaming.. " GET THESE BLANKETY BLANKS AWAY FROM ME OR I WILL CALL THE LAW!!! "... ?????? I said, " Sir.. are you aware that you are walking on DOG BEACH?! "... to which he relied, " BLANKETY BLANK BLANK BLANK... LAW ..mumble mumble. "
I said all that to say this... I think it is because of people like him! :(

dogs love beaches. my old setter used to run along the beach off leash and was as good as gold.

he was sucker for pinching ice cream from kids tho. he would walk up ever so slowly smiling and wagging his tail. then if he had chance he would oh so gently just slide the ice cream into his mouth. and just stand there eating it.
i used to laugh like mad and so did the kids usually.
i had to replace a few ice creams tho lol.

Take Action. Find out the responsible people and their departments and get in contact with them. Post their contact info around the lake, in pet shops, groomers, vets, etc. and urge people to leave messages, emails, letters, against the ordinance. Make the people who authored the language take notice - - sometimes ya gotta work within the system to make a difference.

I know the one dog park here was in the process of being 'closed' to dogs, the owners who use it banded together, started a group, started policing the people using it, came out to help fence off areas, worked their butts off... and still have their park. Maybe you should look at starting a group to get a dog beach area, make it 'nicer' than the rest of the beaches (cleaner, better maintained...)?

That's typical of Toronto city council isn't it? Ban a few dogs from the beach, solve the water pollution problem! Yeah, and what about the million or so geese crapping all over the place?? Will they ban them too? I'd rather have dogs in the water than a lot of the people that live in "The Big Smoke":yuck::yuck::yuck:

It will just turn into another reason to fine people! They can't get money from the geese, so let's go after the dog owners. Good Old TO.

Dogs aren't allowed anywhere around here it seems. We do have 3 dedicated dog beaches in San Diego county where dogs can actually be off-leash (the beaches that are so polluted they're unfit for human swimming, so they give it to the dogs, how nice of them eh?)

I live 6 blocks from the beach and would love to be able to take my dogs for a little stroll near the ocean.. they'd absolutely love that! But dogs are not allowed on the beach (or any public beach that isn't one of the three I mentioned above). They don't care if the dog is leashed or not, they are not allowed at all and you will get fined. I don't get it. And its very sad. :(

We're so lucky that Jupiter Beach is dog friendly. Every so often, someone tries to change that......but there is enough dog loving public outcry that it doesn't seem to work. There is a group that keeps it picked up and litter bags are at every beach entrance. My daughter did beach cleanup for her required high school community service hours.

I hope your beach stays open for the dogs:)

That really makes no sense to me at all. How is walking a dog on or around the beach affecting the water quality??? Like you said, I bet people pee in the water all the time during the summer! There aren't many dog friendly beaches around here either.

We have a dedicated Dog Beach at Quiet Water's Park in Annapolis but I don't use it because I have access to other Beaches in our community. When we vacation in NC, the OBX, we stay in Avon because the Nag's Head Beaches are closed to animals during the prime season. I've never heard the argument about animal waste contaminating the water. More likely it's run-off or seepage from nearby septic fields. A few Beaches in Delaware had this problem and were closed until the cause was located and fixed.

UPDATE

The ban has gone through. At least for the time being they are keeping the off leash areas but for how long. Even the experts agree the problem isn't dogs. "Lou Di Gironimo, general manager of Toronto Water, said the city has tested lake water for E. coli and found the largest amounts were the result of gull and goose excrement." What annoys me is the fact I have two girls who love to play at the beach so now they are limited to playing in the off leash area if we take Molly to the beach with us? That just really sucks.

Hey Molly&Me, check out Sue-Ann Levy's column in the Toronto Sun today (Toronto Sun.com) I got a good chuckle reading it. She seems to hold the same opinion of council as a lot of us do. Glad I don't have to live in the SRT (Socialist Republic of Toronto!!):D

I just read her article, thanks for the heads up. As she states it isn't just the fact that dogs can't walk the beach, it is the fact that our city council is wasting time and money to accomplish this blue flag goal and it isn't the dogs that are the primary cause of the problem. I love her comment about the water being to cold. Seriously I think I can count about 6 people ever swimming in the water during the hot weather.

Nothing is worse than goose crap!!! OMG! That stuff is horrendous! Pig poop smells better.
We always visited a lovely park on our way to CO. The dogs loved it so much. It has been overtaken by geese and their sh*t! It is horrendous! The whole area stinks so bad, you have to plug your nose as you drive by on the interstate!!!

I'm an animal lover but we need some goose hunting in these places!!!

betcha they are Canadian geese. Sadly it was the Canadian ones who brought the plane down in the Hudson River.
