Hi, so today my new pup Tucker had a vet appointment and my 1 and almost a half year old golden(Denver) need her Rabies and DHLPP(i think thats what it is called). We usally stick with the 2 nicer vets Megan or Kyle, they are both knowledgeable and have never really done anything wrong, until we got our golden a year and almost a half ago. When Denver was took into the vet for her second 10 week checkup as a puppy was the first time it started, she started asking questions that i didnt feel comfortable or thr person with me didnt want to answer. Basically mad at us for getting a dog because our last one got aggressive and had to be rehomed 5 years ago. It really made me mad today though we took them both into the vet and we didnt get Megan or Kyle we got a different person the one i dont like he kept mixing up my dogs and labeled Denver as a red golden and Tucker as a gold colored golden which is mixed around. He gave Tucker a shot and it went from one side of his fur out the other and then had to give him another shot because he basically poked a hole in him. Then gave him 2 more shots roughly. Denver was ok but he was ruff with her to. And im worried he overdosed Tucker on the distemper. Will Megan sat in there she wont even talk to us and we have not done anything. Im looking for a different vet but how do i know if they are good? I dont want to go back to our regular vet this expierence was horrible Tucker is in so much pain i cant even touch his back and Denver seems off to. What are the main things you look for in a good vet? Im just really upset after he did that i wanted to grab my dogs and walk out. I do have lots i cant choose from in my area. And as long as the vet is good ill pay anything. So im just wondering what everyone looks at when they choose a vet? Thanks in advance.

When I choose a vet, I try to find a practice that isn’t corporately owned.
Also, I’m not sure what happened in your case, but when my dogs get boosters they only see the tech. It sounds like you might have just seen the techs?

So.... it's a little too late to tell you this, but I do not let my vet do DHPP and Rabies at the same appointment. And definitely do not let them do Lepto at the same time as any other shots.

I'm really confused at your description of "poking a hole" or going in one hair and out the other? I really have no idea what you are suggesting there.... but if your dog is having a reaction, it may be because he got fully loaded with all of the vaccines. And the bad news is if he has a problem with any of the vaccines, you won't know which. :(

We spoke with our neighbors when we first moved in at our house to see where they took their pets. The vet at the time was an old fashioned type who gave us his cell phone to call in case of emergencies (in which case he would meet us at the vet etc). After he retired and left the practice to 2 younger female vets who were basically in it for the $ and pushed surgeries for everything... we gradually lost faith in that practice and switched to completely to our ER vet who time and again were there when we needed them and we trusted them. ER vet - the owners are both vets. My niece is actually starting to work at this vet and the things she's shared behind the scenes - reinforces all of the reasons we've stayed with this vet for the past 30+ years.

Basically best I can say is talk to other pet people around you... people who take very good care of their pets, complete with vet care.

I would look for a vet (or vet practice) that you trust. If you don‘t have confidence in their ability to provide routine care, how much confidence would you have if you needed to take a sick dog to them?

Also, identify a vet practice where you can take your dogs for emergency after-hours care. This may be the same as your regular vet, or it may be different, but it’s a good idea to plan ahead. There’s nothing worse than having a pet with a life-threatening illness or trauma, and discovering that you can’t get them seen quickly by a vet.

I think the OP is describing the vet or tech lifting a skin-fold to do a sub-dermal injection and pushing the needle right through the skin-fold. I’ve seen a vet make that mistake when injecting a goat.

If you feel uncomfortable, find a different vet. I had one try to force me to do a pediatric spay. My contract and the fact that she was a show line puppy that I was considering showing meant nothing. They wouldn’t do a microchip unless I spayed her. So I found a much more supportive vet.Ask your friends which vet they go to.

I had a vet tell me how he “thought it was irresponsible to shop not adopt”. He even used the slogan. It wasn’t worth the breath it would take to have the conversation. This was after he asked “what kind of dog is this?”. It was Moe, he’s dark, and field bred, but 100% golden. This was a vet that was new to a practice I’d gone to for 30 years. I called the owner of the practice later that night, we are friends. He explained to me that this vet had been let go from another practice for his bedside manner and paperwork issues, but was great at reading sonograms and diagnostics. I told him I’d never see him again. He told me that if it was an ER situation to put my personal feelings aside, that he was a good vet.

He ultimately bought into the practice. My two favorite vets sold out and retired. Now I, and 1/2 their clients, go to a new practice.

You should switch if you aren’t comfortable with the vets or confident in the care. You need a vet you can trust. I switched my dog to a new vet practice when I felt the first one wasn’t a good fit anymore- I didn’t want to do an early spay as recommended, and I felt like it was affecting the other recommendations they made.

Ok, thank you! It was the real vet not the vet tech because they both needed a check up. And suprisingly there was no vet techs in that day.

Ok, thanks! They both got rabies, DHPP and lepto. Now I'm worried. The vet poked the needle through his skin and out the other side of his skin. His back is super sore he whimpers or tries to bite if i try and touch it. I wilk definitely talk to a few people i know and see where they take their pets.

I am definitely looking for a better vet/vet practice. And the vet did what you described above and honestly he didnt seem to know what he was doing.

He wanted us to spay our girl already, she is only a little over a year old 4 months exactly. Im waiting till 2 years to try and stop early spay injures. And another thing is he said he never heard of golden retrievers being at higher risk for cancer. And that if we didnt spay her she would get cancer.

I would have walked out after the 'poking a whole' episode! Any vet office that would hire someone that poorly trained is dangerous.

Run away and never look back!
I wanted to, really badly but i knew better. It was a 3 week wait on any vet servive everywhere I looked. Im thinking about going to a vet thats 30 minutes away. A relative goes there and all their dogs are treated better than expected.
