Now I am unsure.

Firstly, Ill start off by saying the Canadian Healthcare system sucks. I went into the walk in clinic Tuesday night I believe. The ONLY symptoms I was having was a sore left tonsil, tender lymph node in that area and I noticed a dime sized white patch on the lower part of my left tonsil I suspect the pain is coming from. I googled and thought strep throat

Went in, explain to the Doc my concerns and asked his opinion. He looked in my throat, took my temp (no fever) and said okay your on 10 days of Penicillin. That was it, no strep test nothing.

I have been on the Penicillin for 36 hours and still have the white patch and sore left tonsil. I feel fatigued but thats all the symptoms I have.

What else could this possibly be? If I go back they will laugh at me and tell me to stop wasting the systems money as I dont need a strep/mono test.

Should I give it a few more days before I start to flip out? Strep is a bacteria, antibiotics kill bacteria so I have no idea why im not feeling better.

Give it a little more time, antibiotics take at least 48 hours to get to full strength in your system, tho you may notice some improvement sooner. Take the full course of antibiotics then.. if you are not completely better go back.

JMHO...youve not been on them long enough...
You and the doc are assuming based on the exam, that what you have could be bacterial in nature....so he prescribed antibiotics. Makes sense to me. Why do a strep culture if you both think it may be strep? Just to say yes it is strep? The treatment is the same with or without the culture to prove it.

If it is viral - which most sore throats are....then penicillin will do nothing anyway...you're just gonna have to wait it out 10-14 days and it will probably get worse before it gets better.

Take some Tylenol for pain relief...drink plenty of fluids...fix yourself some soup and rest. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Yeah, it's awful not to have to pay for health services...give me a break. You think we'd be WAY better off privatizing the health care system? Would you have gone in if you'd been paying for all the tests/appts you wanted to them to run?

I don't get why you're ragging on the health care system. You got in asap to see a doctor - awesome. Then you're assuming they'd laugh at you if you went back so soon - not even recognizing that you're lucky you even have that option AND wouldn't need to pay for it - and your blaming the healthcare system because the pills aren't working right away? You realize antibiotics aren't magic pills right? They don't magically make people feel better as soon as ingested.

And stop blaming the health care system. Yeah, it's not perfect but it's a heck a lot of better than you're making it out to be.

From reading online I think its a tonsil ulcer or canker sore. I found tons more pics. How the heck would I get that on my tonsil anyway...

I will continue the meds though since I did pay for them lol

When you have had family members die from the negligence of some Doctors in this Country then you will see why I dont really favor the system. When your mother is left half dead with her stomach open when her staples ripped open and the Doc literally goes "Eww I am not touching that wait for your specialist" waiting 2 days with her stomach open to only get blood poisoning and dying. Then, to have yet another two family members die from the laziness of some Doctors in the area...

Yeah, While I appreciate while heath care is covered, the Doctors here have soooo many patients to deal with the care is lacking. Right now theres about 5000 patients to one Doc, sometimes more, because of this, I dont have a family Doctor. He pushed 10 patients through in not even 15 minutes.

I would give it a couple more days and try to gargle with warm salt water. If you don't feel better is it possible for you to see an ear, nose and throat doctor? I would only get really worried if the pain gets to the point of hurting really bad or the tonsil starts to swell up. I hope you get better soon. Oh and I don't know if they sell it in Canada but Cepacol throat spray really helped me when my throat hurt. It numbs it and takes the pain away. Here is a link so you can see what it looks like. I am surprised he didn't take a throat culture, her in the US they now give two - one instant test and another that takes two days.

Sometimes strep throat needs a stronger antibiotic or more than 10 days of medication. There are many strains of it, and can have many symptoms. Please continue taking your anitbiotic, because untreated strep can cause kidney and heart issues.

Have you been anywhere out in public in teh last 3-5 days? Grocerystore, library, doctors office....if you have been coughed on sneezed on or touched a public surface you could have picked up the bacteria and introduced it to your body.

From a quick google search - found on webmd (take it for what its worth folks!):
"Strep throat will go away in 3 to 7 days with or without treatment. Doctors usually treat strep throat with antibiotics even though they may not make you well faster."

I already have a heart condition which is why I went to the clinic right away. I am not bashing the system, I just think things should be improved. To me, a basic rapid strep test would of been enough to satisfy me.

I walk the dog every day. But I don't think I was in an actual public place in 3-4 days, though I may of been I am trying to remember.

I recently read that if you have a canker sore that honey helps with the pain. It coats the sore and protects it so it can heal. One on your tonsil would be hard, but how eating a spoon of honey and seeing if that helps with the discomfort.

Does it really matter how you got sick? Youre sick and dont feel well.
Take your prescribed meds, rest, stay hydrated, and heal.
If you still feel like crap in 10 days after taking your meds and using tried and true ways to help your body heal. Then go back to walk in care.

I will try the honey (even though I dont like honey) I will see if it helps. I am trying to down some grapes, blueberries and rasberries and every time I swallow it kills. What about honey in some tea?

I am still going to take my antibiotics.

I think fruit will be acidic and burn your throat if it is raw. You need to give the meds more time to start working.

Gargle with warm salt water, that will help the sore heal. Might sting a little but does work.

The acid in fruits and juices will make the pain worse.

Hah, this was kind of my reaction. I'm currently without insurance while I wait for my new college's insurance plan to kick in on the 22nd. I'd love to see a doctor about a problem I've been having for a while, but... I can't afford it. I'd love to just pop into a doctor's office and get seen, even if it was by a subpar doctor. A subpar doctor is better than no doctor at all.

To the OP: I hope you're feeling better soon. Give the antibiotics some time, and take care of yourself!

Like everyone said, keep on the meds and stick out the full course. As a frequent strep throat -getter myself - and tonsilitis - and mono, I don't bother going to the doc anymore because it takes my body with no meds just as long to get through the pain. I use a salt-water gargle, or an iodyne (sp?) gargle that helps with the bacteria... and last time my doc prescribed me a gargle that had a numbing agent in it that helped a TON with the pain.

From the posted pic, it looks to me like a pretty mild version of strep throat compared to the white/green pus I get on my tonsils! eeek. :yuck:

Hope you feel better soon!
