Does anyone know the likelihood of a bitch coming into heat prior to 6 months? We want to spay our Golden pup before her first heat but want to wait as long as possible. Planning on having her spayed right at 6 months.

I can't answer this question, we are also planning on getting Bailey spayed just 10 days before she's 6 months old.

I've only once had a girl come in before 10-11 months. Most of mine come in for the first time closer to 11-12 months.

My daughter was wondering the same thing...also are there any signs that she is going into heat? My daughters breeder doesnt want her to spay her pup till between 12 and 18 months...but my daughter doesnt want to deal with heat if she doesnt have to...
Ive had my dogs spayed at 6 months or a but before.

My vet tells me that if they are spayed before their first heat, that the chances of some cancer, i.e. mammory, are reduced.

Our breeder strongly suggested we not spay our girl until a year. We got a boy the second time & this time it is written in the contract, & voids health guarantees if we spy/neuter either of them before one.

She sent me lots of research & after reading I agreed. The increase incidence of mammary cancer in a dog who had only one heat cycle is minimal, like less than 1% increase. However their is a significant increase in development of excessive tibial plateau angle (TPA) in large-breed dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) who were spayed by 6 months.. There is also an increase of spay incontinence in female dogs, and an increase in cancer in males if done early.
