HEllo, first post here. 3rd time golden owner. Long story short my 5 month golden has tear stains below his eyes. I would wipe his eyes, but it still stains. They have gotten larger over the course of a few weeks and I was just curious what it could be. Hes due to get neutered soon so I might ask the vet when hes there but just curious if its something I should be worried about, or if his eyes will stop watering and the stains will work their way out.

Heres a pic for reference:

I had this problem with Rookie when he was a puppy. In his case, it seemed to be a food allergy. I changed his kibble and the problem went away.

My late Great Pyrenees would get that way, seasonally. It would be around late spring in New England, only one eye. I always believed it was from allergies.

Welcome to the forum. Your pup is very cute. I have one golden that has similar tearing. Seems to happen more often now that we have colder temps. My other golden has more "eye booger" which I wipe off at least twice a day. If you do ask your vet please post back so we all know.

Could his eye lashes be irritating his eyes?
That's what I was wondering too--but you really can't tell from the photo. Could be allergies, blocked tear duct, or inflammation due to back teeth coming in. You're smart to ask your vet. If your vet thinks a referral to a specialist is needed, then that would be the step after that.

If the excessive tearing stops the stains will fade...

Does he squint, blink a lot or rub his eye with his paws? If so, I would bump up and get him in before his neuter appointment....irritating eye problems are very, very uncomfortable and without an exam, could be something relatively simple to remedy or very serious.

If he has entropion (eyelid that rolls inward)...then that is a different ball of wax...

Do the eyes get goopy too (as opposed to runny and clear)? Riley ended up with conjunctivitis from doggy day care (just like kids in day care). Antibiotic drops cleared it up.
