Hi everyone,
My Golden Retriever male Brady just turned 10. Up until his 10th birthday he always acted like a puppy. He still ran to his toy bin upon my arrival home and brought me his toys to play with. He also always greeted me at the door.
Over the past two months, he has slowed down tremendously. He seems to be having some arthritis in his back hip and he has started having slight twitches in his face occasionally. They do not seem like grand mal seizures, if anything possible petit seizures, but he has never had seizures in the past. At first he would twitch a few times a day, now he does it more often. He hasn't had a full seizure or episode though. He also is having increased difficulty with his hind legs and hips, which could also be due to the cold weather and age or could be connected to the twitching.
I had him tested for lyme and other tick borne diseases, as well as a full senior blood panel. All checked out fine. The vet put him on previcox for his arthritis for 10 days to see if this helps. His eating, bowels and urination are all fine, but he is just not himself. He has urinated in the house 4 times in the past 2 months and had one formed bowel movement in the house. He hadn't had an accident in the house since he was 6 months old. He sleeps most of the day, which he didn't used to do. He only sleeps in our bed now, whereas he used to love sleeping on the couch or in the hallway on the carpet. He also sniffs with his nose literally in the ground and never marks his territory anymore on walks. He doesn't seem to be all that interested in walking, whereas he used to pull and want to walk forever. I know he is getting older, but his behavior changed way too quickly. Does anyone have any input on this possibly being epilepsy? Anyone have similar issues with their retriever? Any input would be greatly appreciated. He is the best friend to my family and I'm willing to do anything to help him. I've been to the vet 3 times in the past month and other than the previcox, not much else has been suggested.
Thanks,
Andy in Massachusetts (Brady's loving dad)
