After a few months of on and off limping and mostly ineffective conservative treatment approach (as recommended by orthopedic vet : included mild sedation and strict rest for a month) , I brought my now 1 year old golden to her primary care vet to get X-rays done.

The vet recommended that I see an orthopedic surgeon but her opinion was that she has some sort of cartilage issue/injury in her right shoulder. I brought her to the orthopedic surgeon right away who did a physical exam & reviewed the X-rays and diagnosed her with OCD in her shoulder.

He recommends arthroscopic surgery on her shoulder - of course I am going to do it because I want her to be the happiest and healthiest she can be but i was wondering if anyone has experienced this with their golden puppy and has either done the surgery or hasn’t done the surgery and the overall outcome of either situation.

I just want to make sure I’m doing the best thing for her and would love to hear other people’s experience with OCD in their goldens.

When Honey was pup 2010 she'd limp every once in awhile and she was diagnosed with OCD. The orthopedic surgeon said it was like walking with sand in your shoes, (ouch😩), she had surgery in the fall of 2011. She never limped once after the surgery and as you can imagine, the hardest part was keeping a year old golden calm for the recovery period. The piece of cartilege that was removed was smaller than a grain of rice.
Good luck!
I was also devastated ): I’m so glad honey doesn’t limp anymore and is no longer in pain!!

Chloe had the surgery august 23rd & yes, it has been almost impossible to keep her calm but we’re doing our best. They did arthroscopic surgery so the incisions are tiny and she didn’t need stitches / recovery is shorter and easier.

She is still limping but I figured it was because she isn’t fully healed yet. Honey didn’t limp even during recovery? :(

the piece of cartilage they removed was relatively big.. probably the size of three grains of rice put together

thank you for your response !!! :)
