I haven't been on in awhile. It's been mostly happy stuff and puppy trials of life keeping us busy this past year. Aspen turned 1 on Sept 28th. She's blown her coat and is going to go into heat any day now. It's been almost exactly 1 year since 10/9/13 since I had to put my Raz down. She was 13 1/2 years and in liver failure and having seizures, and we think she had a stroke the night before. So this all makes it extra hard in the past few days.

Aspen was with my trainer and boarder who also breeds goldens for about 8 days. She does have a farm. Aspen does have PICA problem and Elaine is just as aware about it. I got her back Weds 10/8 and we know she pooped Tues 10/7. I drove to get her and gave her food and water when I got home it was early afternoon. She was fine and happy. That evening she vomited her food! She doesn't do that ever do that! So I kept the water down and tried the food again in the morning of Thursday. This time she threw it up within a couple of hours and didn't touch her food again, so I removed it and kept the water down. She still hadn't pooped at home. I figured her tummy really needed some settling. She threw up again that night but were down to stomach contents. Friday morning she's still not interested in food and threw up more stomach liquid. So I called the vet to get in. I got in late morning and finally she pooped at a solid poop right before the vet but, she's still not acting right or eating. The vet got a fecal sample which was normal, temp (slightly elevated), gave her anti emetics, antibiotics, & anti-inflammatories. She's thinking Enteritis as some tissue was looking red. Let me preface this we are in a rural town of 9,500 1 1/2 hours from Kansas City. We went home with meds and a bland diet of ID. Saturday morning she still wasn't better and I couldn't get her meds down! She's still not interested in food and looking very sick. Back to the vet! She draws blood and its normal. She can feel she's full of stool, she digs some out, to stimulate her and we go walk and get her to poop and low and behold she poops a black tarry poop! Internal Bleeding Flag!!! Referral to a 24 Animal hospital in Kansas City! Off we go Xrays are negative (I'm a Radiology Tech - so i know some things won't show). So they are going to run electrolyte labs and I did as about a Cortisol panel for Addisons disease even though she has not exhibited any signs of lack of hunger or lethargy up until maybe Thurs. The Dr is not going to do the Ultrasound until Monday. They gave her some Tagamat and a GI coating for her tummy as a "bandaid" for any bleeding that might have occurred to stop. But there are no answers. We're throwing a lot of money at it and I feel like we may never know. I did get pet health insurance through gopetplan.com, but I have no idea how long it takes to get reimbursed. We've never had a claim. I'm just sick over this she's just a baby and I hate that she is so far away and we don't know what's wrong. Non answers are the worst.

The Dr just called and they just ran her blood and her Red blood cell count is down from 45% yesterday to 26%! They are going to rerun it.

Oh no, I hope you can get to the bottom of this. Could she have ingested a poisoned rodent or something while on the farm? I'm sure your vets are thinking of every possibility.

As for Pet Plan, I'm assuming you had the insurance before this happened. If so, they will want to have her up to date medical records that prove it's not a pre-existing condition. Then, you just send them the claims form from her online portal with your signature and your vet's initials. Just make sure the vet indicates the exact same diagnosis for each visit. If the first vet writes GI upset and the second vet writes internal bleeding, they will treat it as two separate conditions and your deductible will apply to each. I've submitted claims to them in the past and it has taken between a few weeks and a month or more to get my reimbursement.

Thank you so much! Yes I'll have to make sure just like the hospital that the notes and diagnoses match, but there wasn't a diagnoses with in town country vet, heck the weekend 24 hour vet still doesn't know!

Hey everyone, I need some more input and help here. I know it's Sunday night, but I've gotten help before. I'm frustrated with "non answers" from the 24 hour animal hospital and I'm starting to freak out! Aspen is only 1 years old and was healthy and fine an went downhill fast!

So she's actually gone downhill in the last 24 hours at the vet hospital! Her rerun bloodcount was 25.7% so it's non regenerative anemia. Her white cells were on the lower end of normal but her neutrophils were low. So the vet is putting her on antibiotics. She only just starting to get diarrhea today! I asked them to run the emergency ultrasound today and not wait til Monday. That didn't show a blockage. Her lymphnodes are mildly enlarged in her mesentary intestines which may indicate a bacterial infection - so antibiotics. The Dr asked if a clotting factor panel was run, I thought it had been, but apparently not. That would be to see if she injested rat poison or something. It came back low, my understanding is that it would be high if she had. So that didn't help. So we are still waiting on the Specialist until Monday morning. the doctor will rerun the red blood values at 2am. As long as she stays stable she will not need a transfusion. They are going to send out a Cortisol test for Addisons disease which takes 24 hours. But she has never had any lethargy or appetite issues or vomiting or diarrhea episodes before this!

Oh no, I am so sorry. That is so frustrating, I am sure!

Keep pushing for answers and tests, she is still so young. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your baby, both of you, hang in there!

I'm so sorry - I hope you get some answers soon. Mostly, I hope she starts to feel better. It's so hard when they're sick and we don't know why. Sending good thoughts to you.

How frustrating and worrisome for you. I feel so bad for Aspen too. I hope they can get this figured out soon. Please know I'm thinking about both of you.

I brought her home. Her Bloodwork is normal except for the anemia which is stable it just hasn't been long enough for her to make red blood cells yet. We had a $3329 for 4 days. We did some labs, xrays, and an Ultrasound. She was at a Blue Pearl facility in Kansas City. She still won't eat. She has a GI protectant on board, and antibiotic and an appetite stimulator. She needs anti nausea too. She threw up on the way home. They wanted to do and Endoscopy with biopsy open GI surgical biopsy and couldn't tell me what they were looking for! Endoscopy $1600-$1900 & open $2500 - $3500! The problem is we don't have anymore money to figure this out and were sick over it! Shes only 1 years old! Our breeder thought the prices were ridiculous too. I should have taken her to the University of Missouri. For $500 - $600 a night I think we can take care of her at home and take her to the local vet for what we cant!

Those prices seem high to me too, but I'm originally from WA so idk if that could be why. Could you fax her paperwork to the University and get a second opinion/quote for an endoscopy if needed? Surgeries at our university were soooo much cheaper than vet hospitals for us and they collaborated with several other vets and students. Also, do you have insurance or could you look into care credit if needed? Again, I'm sorry Aspen is going through this and that you still don't have answers yet. It's so frustrating, especially when you are spending that kind of money :(
