Making Mod Procedures Public

Maybe this has already been done somewhere, but I think it would be helpful for a mod or mods to explain their procedures for dealing with complaints and the consequences of those complaints.

It's my understanding that the mods confer over decisions and work together, but I'm not sure that it's been explained publicly anywhere. It might help for everybody to know what the typical process is so that rumors don't go flying quite so easily.

I think it's an excellent idea that mods don't speak publicly about individual cases, and I hope that continues. I do think, though, that the process should be a matter of public record on the board so people understand what does happen and, even more importantly, what does not happen.

Thanks!

I think we understand how the mods operate, and I can only imagine the amount of complaints they receive on a daily basis.

As far as publically airing reasons for specific bans -> Uh... no, I don't think this is necessary since I think in most cases the reason for the banning is obvious and in most cases it is nobody's business. I don't particularly want to know who's been banned or why.

If the mods change the way they do things, I would hope that they reserve bannings for the last resort. And you know, reverse a recent ban.

Aww, thanks you guys. I figured after my couple of weeks off the forum, it would be a good time to change out the avatar and sig for newer pics. The sig pic is at sunrise at Hammonasset Park. I got jealous of all LJilly28's great sunrise beach pictures and went out to take my own. The dogs couldn't figure out how to jump down to the water to chase those seagulls, so they just stared wistfully as the seagulls called at them.

Here's the full crop instead of the banner crop. It's better 'cause you can see the sunrise clouds:

Maybe you understand it, but I don't think the procedures are public, and I think they ought to be. It might protect the mods from some of the inaccurate accusations that have been made.

I absolutely agree here. Even when the reason for a banning is not obvious, the mods should continue to keep the information between them and the banee.

Me too, and I think it would help to see publicly that their procedure is only to use bannings as a last resort. For example, if a ban only comes after a warning (instead of for a first offense), wouldn't it be helpful to know what procedure they follow?

Knowing the procedures and guidelines followed by mods would help everybody know that their behavior was fair.

I was wondering all that and more since I am an golden oldie myself and all this forum, blog stuff is beyond me. For instance, does someone own the GRF? How do administrators, moderators etc get chosen? If you pay, what does the money go for? I appreciate all the work that is done, that is for sure. Just don't understand any of it.

A lot of those accusations do not come from not knowing how forum mods operate. Keep in mind a lot of us have been playing on forums for a long time. And personally speaking, I'm friends with the mods and admins over at another board. The most important thing is that the mods and admins must stay neutral and respectful when it comes to their duties. The first time there is the slightest hint that they are doing something because they do not like a person or their views will unmistakably have a lot of people second-guessing their decisions.

Not necessarily. Knowing the procedures and guidelines should be reassuring to people who come on this forum and engage in conversation here.

That's not the same as knowing exactly that these procedures and guidelines were followed, that mods behaved in a neutral and respectful way, etc... <- I doubt we would know that exactly unless they revealed their side of the story.

And no. I still do not want them to start discussing bans publically. It would make matters worse.
