Acana Food Problem--FYI
We have been feeding Acana pet food for at least 5 years to our 7 year old Golden, Max. I have not heard of any recalls of their products, and have always considered there products top quality. We have a 5 month old Golden named Rocky, who we were feeding a puppy food that his breeder was using. Rocky got a whiff of the Acana product, and let us know he preferred it, and we switched him to it after determining that the product was certified for All Life Stages and appropriate for puppies.
Max originally was fed Wild Prairie, which was made in Canada, but we switched to Meadowland when Acana opened a facility in Kentucky a year or two ago, and the Wild Prairie became unavailable in the US.
A couple of weeks ago we received a new bag from Pet Flow.com. We were completely out and fed the new bag to both dogs for the late afternoon meal. That night, both dogs became sick with diarrhea. We switched them to rice/cottage cheese/chicken. I contacted PetFlow.com and they sent a new bag immediately with no charge. PF thought that there might be something wrong with just that particular bag. I obtained a small bag of Meadowland locally. We next fed the new bag and then switched to the 2nd big bag from Pet Flow when it arrived. Their stool was slightly better with the bland diet, but when back on the Meadowland, there was no improvement in both dogs' stool. Clearly, there was a problem with the Acana food.
Next, I went to Petco and bought a bag of Whole Earth Farms Chicken and Turkey Grain Free kibble. I picked it because the ingredient list was similar to the Meadowland product. The next day, the stool from both dogs was markedly better and within a couple of days, their stool was back to normal.
I contacted Acana, and they have opened a case. I provided the code numbers from the bags to Acana. All the code numbers were different with different time stamps. I have not heard anything as of yet. I do not see us going back to Acana in the future.
