Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have a lovely, 10-month old Golden retriever, Lilly. I brought her home 3 months back from one of my friends. She is healthy, active and very very loving. She weights 23kg.

Last two days, we had fed her 1 cup of boiled beetroot apart from her regular diet, which is 300-350g of Canobitz (the only super premium quality dog food available in India) per day. Today morning she had a good work out with her doggie friends in an open park nearby my house. After her afternoon nap, when I took her out, she passed urine that is reddish in color. So far, I have seen that her urine is generally amber in color. Is there anything that I should worry about it? I was wondering if it is because of the beetroot that she had taken in the morning. Other than this she seemed to be healthy. Should I take her to vet today itself or can I wait till I see a next event?

Thanking you in advance,
Regards,

Dileep

Hi and welcome. The reddish urine is quite normal. Beets are high in betalains, which are red and yellow pigments found in plants. Many people and animals cannot break down these pigments, resulting in reddish urine (and even feces). It is harmless. It's similar to the (smelly) effect that asparagus has on many people's urine. :)
