New Member Hello

Normally I don't do this sort of thing but I was googling a place to find dog packs for my new Golden and came upon this website. Of all the dogs I have had, I have never had a Golden and only got him, Jake, by chance. A friend of mine could not provide for him so, once again, I volunteered to take him without reservations.

I have had Jake for about three weeks. He is nine months old. Just yesterday he got his first shots and will be neutered in two weeks. To date he has chewed my laptop cord, shoes, books, AND a hole in my couch!!! That being said he did have options. I bought him plenty of toys and bones but he has not yet mastered chewing those things.

This month I took all four of my dogs (I had two Dachshunds, and a Chihuahua as well), to Coronado, California for the month on a personal quest for peace and healing. (We live in Phoenix, AZ). Tomorrow will be one week of us being here and we have already lost one of the doxies. She was paralyzed all of sudden due to inherited disk disease and had to be put down. (The last few days have been Hell)! I miss her terribly.

ANYWAY ~ Jake will be my last dog. (Two weeks ago my boxer mix died as well)! I am on a quest to make my experiences with Jake (and my remaining two babies), the best that they can be. Here is a link to my blog for Jake. http://myadventureswithjake.blogspot.com/

I hear that Goldens are the best dogs ever and I could use all the help and advice I can get for this beautiful creature.

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

I was born and raised in Phoenix and still miss the Valley of the Sun and desert life ( although can't say I miss those summer temps! lol). There are lots of knowledgeable people here and discussions of about every kind. ..... join in and have fun.

Welcome to the forum,

I am so sorry for your losses. My heart goes out to you. With your new pup Jake, the chewing could be because of his molars setting in place. I never knew this but I went thru the same thing with my Bama years ago and asked my vet. He said there back molar set around that age. The only thing I can tell you is to redirect him to his chew toys when you see him chewing and lots of exercise to wear him out. I also lost a computer cord at that age too.

We would love to see some pictures of all of your pups past and present. I have 3 goldens Bama, Daisy, Pawley. And an american eskimo Shelby. And three cats.

Thank you

Good Morning from Coronado, California. Thank you for all of your responses and for your condolensces.

Jake is doing really well here. We are in our second week of a month long stay and he hasn't chewed anything. I did buy a crate and usually put him in it when I leave. So far, because I feel guilty, I have only left him in it for a few hours. My two little ones, Dixie and Sophie, roam free. They are used to me being gone to work or school.

The beach is wonderful and Jake loves to run and play but fleas are quite nasty here so I have had to double treat him and the girls. We do not have many issues with fleas in Arizona because of the heat (UGH) so we are not used to this. I put Frontline on him before we got here because I was forewarned about the fleas but it didn't seem to help. The vet gave us an oral pill that didn't do a great job so I bought some shampoo, spray, and some Advantage. So far all of that has worked. WHEW!

I would love to post some pictures but I am not sure how to do it. And I haven't mastered replying to each individual person so I will work on that as well.

Thanks again. I am really glad that I found you.
