It's happening!

I am a long time dog owner and am finally getting a Golden!

Currently have a 14 yr old rescue Border Collie, a 5 yr Blue Merle Aussie, and a 1 yr old Chocolate Lab/Border Collie mix. They are all wonderful dogs.

This has been a very hard decision (free puppy from a friend across country), mainly due to my concerns about health problems that face Goldens (this forum has been of great help). Last year I lost a 5 yr old Aussie to mouth Cancer and I was destroyed! However....I am going for it and am excited. I also spent a long time with my long time vet/surgeon chatting about the pros and cons.

She is due here the 3rd week in June and will be driven cross country by my friend and his wife. The good part is that having dogs for over 20yrs there is very little that I needed to buy again. (I save everything). Puppy proofing needs to happen again and I am getting ready for the puppy challenges yet to come.
Puppys are easier when there are other adult dogs to "help" with the training. However...the bad habits are also passed on to the pup!

She has been eating Hills Large Breed Puppy food and I will continue it until she is a yr old or so. TBH, I was not initially happy about her eating anything from Hills...But this rates 4 of 5 stars at dogfoodadvisor.com, so I will continue it for her puppyhood (Lamb formula). My other dogs all eat and love Pure Balance (Walmart believe it or not)..another 4 star food HIGHLY recommended by Dogfoodadvisor. That is a chicken based food. It is relatively inexpensive and has the ingredients I want for my dogs. (no fillers, corn etc). BTW..I have used that food review site for years (they seem legit with their reviews and recall notices and I am NOT affiliated ).
They do not seem to have a high opinion of PPP mentioned so often here, but I am still thinking about trying it if she doesn't do well on the Hills.

First shot is my Lab mix (a real sweetie!..SOMETIMES..)
Here are a few pictures of her. (still in her old home)

Congrats, she's very a very cute little girl.

Please read up on dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in Golden Retrievers which is strongly associated with certain foods. Pure Balance is not grain free which is good but at least some of the Pure Balance formulas include peas in the first five ingredients. Peas and other legumes are suspected to play role in the development of heart failure. Please avoid any grain free food or food with peas or other legumes in the first 5-10 ingredients for your Golden.

TY eeerrrmmm1
..I have and unfortunately it appears that Pure Balance is following the pack and switching to mostly grain free Foods....I will be looking elsewhere very soon when I run low.. Kirkland (Diamond) is good too and I used it for 20+ yrs before quitting Costco. I may just rejoin with 4 hungry mouths to feed, as good food at a good price is hard to find. I may try cooking for them, but only once in a while to hopefully insure that they all get what their lifestages require.

There were many foods like Cali. Natural that were good..that is until soap companys gobbled them up.

Costco Food is no better. Please read up on DCM and Grain-free-you don't want your puppy to go thru what these other dogs have.

Thanx again..(I don't like grain free foods either)

Thank you and maybe I am being dense (for a change..LOL), but I didn't think Kirkland Chicken and Rice had reverted to grain free.

The more I hear about once trusted foods, the more worried I get.
I am going to the food section here once again..
