I am a long time dog owner and am finally getting a Golden!
Currently have a 14 yr old rescue Border Collie, a 5 yr Blue Merle Aussie, and a 1 yr old Chocolate Lab/Border Collie mix. They are all wonderful dogs.
This has been a very hard decision (free puppy from a friend across country), mainly due to my concerns about health problems that face Goldens (this forum has been of great help). Last year I lost a 5 yr old Aussie to mouth Cancer and I was destroyed! However....I am going for it and am excited. I also spent a long time with my long time vet/surgeon chatting about the pros and cons.
She is due here the 3rd week in June and will be driven cross country by my friend and his wife. The good part is that having dogs for over 20yrs there is very little that I needed to buy again. (I save everything). Puppy proofing needs to happen again and I am getting ready for the puppy challenges yet to come.
Puppys are easier when there are other adult dogs to "help" with the training. However...the bad habits are also passed on to the pup!
She has been eating Hills Large Breed Puppy food and I will continue it until she is a yr old or so. TBH, I was not initially happy about her eating anything from Hills...But this rates 4 of 5 stars at dogfoodadvisor.com, so I will continue it for her puppyhood (Lamb formula). My other dogs all eat and love Pure Balance (Walmart believe it or not)..another 4 star food HIGHLY recommended by Dogfoodadvisor. That is a chicken based food. It is relatively inexpensive and has the ingredients I want for my dogs. (no fillers, corn etc). BTW..I have used that food review site for years (they seem legit with their reviews and recall notices and I am NOT affiliated ).
They do not seem to have a high opinion of PPP mentioned so often here, but I am still thinking about trying it if she doesn't do well on the Hills.
First shot is my Lab mix (a real sweetie!..SOMETIMES..
Here are a few pictures of her. (still in her old home)
