Hi, I am Joan & I have 3 goldens. All are bitches, with the oldest being 9 yrs and still wanting to work in Obedience. My 4.5 yr old is training for Rally Execllent. We seem to not beable to get the backup three step in heel position & my yougest is starting her conformation career on Dec. 1st @ the Savannah Kennel Club show. All my girls are from Pekay Kennels
Welcome to the forum! We would love to see photos of your girls.
The back up three steps is easy to teach with a lure and a wall!
Just hold a treat at her nose while she is in heel position, and put her between your leg and a straight wall. Don't come to a full stop; use a bit of social pressure to block her from coming forward, and smoothly take the step backpushing your left hand back too. After she does this three times correctly and you get backwards movement, add the command back, back. I had to teach this to Tally at the actual show about twenty minutes before our first RE leg, so it does work. We used the wall until we got three full steps, and then took it on the open road, lol. They key is not to stop either before otr after, especially if your dog has a whisper of an automatic sit.
Thank you for the advice. I do believe I have held the treat to high but I will try what you have written & let you know how it goes. I have tried to train this in my hallway not outside yet.
You can also hold a leash snuggly behind your back in your right hand.
