Our six-week-GR pup has been crying non-stop since this morning

Hi everybody!

Gibby our GR has been unusually noisy (yelping and crying) since this morning. For the first time too today he potty-ed in his crate. He would usually wait until we take him out. I wonder if there's something wrong with him.

Please advise.

Hubby and I are very worried of him.

Poor puppy!

We got Winnie at 6 weeks. He's 10 years old now. We didn't know then that he should have been with his mom and siblings longer. We also didn't know that his breeder wasn't very good at breeding dogs.

Winnie was so scared and hated being alone. He would cry and howl, and he did potty because he was so upset. I ended up sleeping with him on pillows, and then when he was older he started sleeping under our bed.

Winnie has separation anxiety. He's OK with being alone now. But he does not like to be alone if we're home. He can't tolerate a crate. Putting him in a room alone is terrifying to him.

Aside from that one quirk, Winnie is a lovely dog. He's incredibly social. He loves people more than dogs. At the dog park, he flirts with the ladies more than he plays with dogs. He's the self-appointed doggie police, and makes sure all dogs play nicely and use their manners. Winnie likes dogs a lot, but he loves people even more. We have a 1 year old rescue puppy, and I think, now, he might like her more than us people.

You'll need to be very patient and understanding with the puppy. It's very scared. You'll also want to do lots and lots and lots of socialization with many different people and dogs once the puppy has all of it's shots.

My two goldens came too early, from a sorry breeder.

Fourteen years ago I did not know about researching, or how important it was.Or that litter-mates were an under-taking.

My two goldens were absolute cry-babies until they had been in our home for about six weeks.

My wife and I had to drive home on lunch breaks to feed and play with the puppies (and clean).

We had to set timers and take the puppies out a lot at night. We would switch off so our sleep stretches were longer.

My puppies grew into marvelous adult dogs.

Hang in there I hope it gets better for you.

I think it is all well and good that this could theoretically be seperation anxiety

BUT

unless YOU KNOW for sure this is not a medical issue in a very young puppy then this pup needs to go to the vet... and make sure that there is nothing going on medically, the fact is that this puppy is very young and very young puppies go down hill quickly.

this pup needs a vet... and once the vet clears the pup then give all the advice about separation anxiety etc. whatever... but the first thing that needs to happen is a vet check if this is continuing.

Welcome!

Please have a vet check him out. Dogs are really bonded to their dam and littermates at six weeks and he is probably confused and lonely for them. My husband and I made the mistake of taking Buckskin from the litter at six weeks and he was really miserable for a couple of weeks despite lots of attention and love at his new "forever" home.

Your little guy will really benefit from spending some quality time with you now. Please update us on how he is doing.

I agree with all who said take him to a vet. He's so young he probably needs to be wormed at the least. A good physical by the vet will let you know if the crying is because he misses his family or if there is something wrong. At his age I would have some nutrical or nutristat available in case he's not eating as he should. Make sure he's drinking enough water as well. Let us know how he's doing and post some pictures if you can! We'd love to see him.

Hi everybody! Thanks for replying :) Hubby and I actually were told by our breeder that Gibby's eight-week-old until we took him to the vet the next day we got him. We didn't want to return him to the breeder since we think we can take good care of him better.

Gibby is actually a super dog, very well-behaved
at home, he makes funny noises when he needs to go potty (Hubby and I are both impressed cause he's super smart for a few weeks old puppy). Although he is seem distracted when we take him out and likes to eat grass (hee, hee).

It was just that yesterday he acted weird and we figured cause he didn't get enough playtime in the morning since it was raining outside and we have to cut down his playtime to 15 minutes compared to the usual 60 minute.

The tips I read on here are VERY VERY helpful. I love this site big time!!! This morning was the second day of his leash training and praise God he did better than his first time! He doesn't pull his leash/ try to bite off his harness. He didcompletely well!

I also observed that this baby dog loves frozen carrots! So when he tred nipping us, we made him chew the frozen veggie instead and it did wonders!

Welcome and congratulations on your new puppy.
I am not clear (it is early in the morning so forgive me) if the visit to the vet you mentioned was before or after you posted your concerns about Gibby's restless day. It sounds to me like it was before - so does Gibby seem to be more settled today? We got Oakley and Seger at just over 9 weeks and I can't remember them playing for 60 minutes at a time. You have a very energetic puppy there :) Keep us posted on his progress - and we still need pics :)

I would agree with not returning your puppy to this breeder. Please take good care of the little one. This forum will help with advices.

Be careful what you give your little guy to eat, as puppies have very sensitive tummies! The eating grass thing is a flag to me that his tummy may be upset. Are his poops normal and firm? Or are they runny with no shape? Puppies can get dehydrated very quickly! Personally, I would still take your little guy to the vet, just to make sure. I would also lay off introducing too many different foods and treats. You should be just using kibble and one special treat to train right now. Keep his diet simple and he will be very happy. Sorry to be preachy, but we see a lot of new people here with pups who have stomach issues. It is very stressful on a pup to leave mom at any age, let alone 6 weeks.

By the way- welcome! (where are my manners?). It is forum policy that new forum members must post a picture of their pup with every post, and two pictures if you ask a question. No exceptions! :)

We don't actually let him nibble the grass. We would let him know that it is NOT OK to do that whenever he does. His poops are fine. I just observed that he poops more often now than last week. We took him to the vet this morning and he'll be back in two weeks for his next shot. :wavey:
Here are Gibby's photos from my phone :) We have him for a week now.

So glad you did take him to the vet. Odds are he was missing his siblings and mother. The newness of your house, the new toys and attention kept him busy, but then the reality of being 'alone' for the first time set in. So glad he is in a home where he is loved and cared for.

He sure is adorable! Glad he is feeling better. Again i would be careful what you give him cause their stomachs are VERY sensitive. It seems very smart not to have taken Gibby back to that breeder. I'm sure he will grow up to be a very fine little boy. Good luck!

No, hubby and I will never do that to him. We love him so much but we make sure that we don't spoil him a lot. We actually live in an apartment building and we really appreciate his very good behavior. He seems very, very active outside though. The only thing is he likes nipping and biting. So today we got him a teether to help him with his teething situation.

Thanks for your concern :)

Gibby is sugar sweeeet. Looking forward to see him growing. I love the baby steps, he looks so proud. And that cute little nose.

Gibby is absolutely handsome! It sounds as though you are very attentive and loving which is exactly what he needs.

Did I understand correctly that the breeder was not truthful about his age? If so, what a shame. Personally, I would advise the AKC about any breeder who isn't forthcoming with the truth.

In any case, enjoy Gibby as he goes through all of the puppy stages and grows up. He's lucky to have such a caring family.
