Did anyone here know that acorns are toxic to dogs?

I just read on another forum that acorns are toxic to dogs. I googled it and found several references to the fact that they can cause kidney damage! We have several oak trees in the yard and my dogs eat acorns like they are going out of style. I just called my husband and told him to blow off the deck and blow the acorns under it (we have lattice surrounding the base of the deck).

A week or so ago I posted to a friend's FB page that acorns are toxic, as her young Dalmatian puppy was carrying them around in his mouth. And with Dals having kidney concerns anyway, I was worried about him.

Hahaha

Now see, you could have saved me some worry by letting me know a week ago! Seriously, I have lived in that house for 8 years and all three of my dogs have eaten acorns during that time, well, Jasmine for 8 years, Danny and Jasper just for their entire lives so far. Yikes!

GREAT! We are getting a puppy this weekend and our yard and deck are covered with acorns!!!
My other dogs have never eaten them but I am sure a puppy will LOVE them. Like I am not paranoid enough. I don't know if the lawn mower will suck them up.. I'll have to ask Dan.

Thank goodness I knew this before we adopted Toby. It was a constant challenge for us that first fall, and it didn't help we had a bumper crop! He then switched to chrysanthemums and lantana, also toxic! Finally pulled all of them out of the yard!

I remember hearing that, now that you mention it. At one campground we get a space under the oak trees. Penny has never bothered with them, thank goodness.

It is funny when we're sitting in the camper and hear them fall on the roof and then roll off. It's clunk, rollrollrollrollroll.

Wish I had heard this sooner. Loki loves them! Looks like I have a lot of work to do in the yard this week.
