Dakota is 8 weeks old and yesterday was extremely active and ate a ton of food. Today she is still eating a ton of food but is spending the day sleeping. She reminds me of my kids when they went through growth spurts where all they wanted to do was eat and sleep. Do puppies go through times like this? Also, it is very hot out here and everytime I take her outside she cries, goes to the bathroom and raises to the back door...could she just not like the heat? We have central AC so it is cool in the house.

Well, I don't know for sure about 8 week old puppies and heat, but my 1 year old golden couldn't wait to get back inside when it was 95+ outside. he would go out, do his business, then it was straight to the backdoor. He didn't fool around, and I was grateful for it. It was a struggle just to get him to do a 10-15 minute walk.

I'll let someone else with more puppy knowledge chime in about the eating / sleeping thing. :)

I'm not sure about the eating/sleeping, but our 8 week old seems to hate the heat, too! She'll play outside a little bit in the early morning or late evening, but other than that she pees and runs to the back door. Sometimes I have to carry her to the pee area twice to get her to go - she just wants to be back inside! We're in Florida - so it is super hot.

Momx3 if you have an 8 week old you should join our July Puppy forum. How big is your pup?

Bobbie sleeps all the time too. It seems like she is just awake for a few hours....I wish she ate all the time like yours....hehe

Mako was a year in august. He hates the heat. Sometimes I have to force him outside to go. The only time he will go out is if he knows we are going on the boat then he is first out the door and on the boat. When he was 8 weeks old to16 weeks old all he did was sleep. He would be up for an hour sleep for 2. It was crazy.

What would you call ' a ton of food'? I take it she only gets her kibble and a few treats, so that won't be very much...And yes, if your house is nice and cool, I'm sure she prefers that! Here in CT temperatures have dropped a little, and I see a lot of difference in Tess's activities. She wants to go outside a lot more and really likes to walk again for more than 10 minutes.

I just took her out and it is night and she was running around like a maniac so I think she just doesn't like the heat/sun. I don't either so that works great for both of us ;)

What I mean about a ton of food is just her kibble. She is getting over coccidia so I am just keeping her on her kibble without any treats. She went from eating about 1/3 of a cup 3 times a day to about 1/2 cup a day 3 times a day and is gobbling it down.

They do turn into littler hoovers, huh?

Cosmo used to sleep a tonne and now he still sometimes gets days when he's really tired and just wants to sleep all day. It usually corresponds to something changing physically. Like last week I noticed he was so tired all day and the next day I noticed that his fur has grown like a whole cm overnight and went from rough to soft. I guess it's a growth spurt! I personally like those days. He's just content to lie at (usually on) my feet.

Oh, and yea, Cosmo hates heat. As a tiny guy he hated it so much he couldn't get comfortable in even moderate temperatures and would walk around whining. He's better now but prefers the cool, especially when it's cool and raining. It's a good thing we live in Vancouver...that is, for him at least.
