Our puppy has found a love of chewing on the bottom step of our staircase and after substituting toy after toy and removing her from the area, I finally put a few treats in her Kong toy and gave it to her. It has been keeping her occupied (and away from our stairs) for the last 30 minutes. Is it safe to leave them in her crate with her while I go out? I figured it would help pass the time for her.
Yes, kongs are completely safe! However, if you want to be completely sure, you could buy the black kong which is for extreme chewers. Make sure you stuff it with a vareity of treats!
my little girl took the top off of a red one within her first six months. i dont think a golden can tear one up in a day. my friend has two amstaffs that can destroy a black one in hours. very friendly obedient dogs, but when i watch them squish a black kong, i get chills thinking how they could destroy me with their tremendous jaws.
The Kong has literally been my saving grace! Maggie has chewed every wonderful toy to it's demise that I've purchased for her, except for Bully Sticks, bones and Kongs. I always keep them stuffed and at the ready in the freezer. They are durable and last a very long time. Maggie loves her Kong. Now, if I could just find a nice plush toy that she would come to love as a special companion, to keep rather than chew it to death!
Should I start with the baby blue Kong or get a red one?? We dont have Petsmart of any really cool petshops here in Spain but I did find kongs! I have ben giving her Pig Ears to chew...Im not sure how good that is. My Mom yelled at me when she saw her chewing one on Skype and said I sholdnt let her have them. But she loves them in 2 weeks she has made it through 1/2 of 1 ear only.
What is best for her to chew, and what is a bully stick I keep hearing others talk about??
Yes, the ones for puppies are pink or blue, and it you put something inside it she will chew it. My vet recommended cottage cheese, I also use yogurt and then freeze it, but with her tummy issues you might ask your vet. You can always use something to plug the little hole then put chicken broth or something in it and freeze it, just take out the plug before you give it to her so she won't form a vacuum.
A lot of people like antlers, they last a loooong time. I know with ears my two devour them in under a few minutes. Mine also like hoofs and they too last a long time.
Antlers get Baxter's ultimate approval: the belly up position
Fozen kongs are always a hit, as is his purple treat bottle and Nylabone keys. He has gone through at least a dozen sets of those keys...he loves them!
I never dreamed that Charlie would like an antler... but he LOVES LOVES LOVES them!! I mean, he never growls at my cats for anything, but when he's got his antler, they can't get within 5 feet of him or he lets out a low growl. Thankfully, he doesn't growl at me when I need to take it away. :uhoh:
So, antlers get my number 1 vote, then a stuffed frozen kong!
We love Kongs here. Started with the pink. Now that Maggie is a voracious young adult, just yesterday I had to throw out her red one that was getting worn & torn. We're down to one black one, not a good thing because you need one on stand-by in the freezer. You can get creative with stuffing them. There's a list somewhere with 101 ways to prepare them. If your dog likes healthy foods, you can use fruits & veggies. We buy dehydrated liver treats and the big pieces can be wegded way into the Kong.
