Holistic vs Medicine
Our Daisy May has recently gotten a bacterial skin infection. She's constantly itching and has started to develop small sores and scabs from all her scratching. We got her to our vet shortly after we noticed, who diagnosed her with the infection. He gave us a medicated shampoo with benzoyl peroxide to use twice a week and a dietary supplement we use once a day that contains fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. We're supposed to follow this procedure for 7 days and then back for a follow up visit.
He mentioned he could give her a shot which would help stop the itching, but the infection could come back stronger in a month and be something she'd have to fight indefinitely.
After talking to other Golden owners, we've heard that she should be antibiotics and that the infection could be pretty serious. Letting her 'naturally' beat this is a risk we shouldn't be taking because if it spreads it could cause permanent coat damage. And she's got such a beautiful red coat!
I have to say that we really like him and he's fantastic with her during our visits and we've been seeing him since she was 8 months old (she's almost 2 yrs old now). This is certainly something we'll discuss with him during our next visit, especially if it hasn't gotten better, but I just wanted to hear from anyone else who's experienced skin infections with their Goldens and hear people's thoughts about going holistic vs using medicine...specifically an antibiotic in our case.
