A Tale of Two Rileys

It was the best of time it was the worse of times.........

Our 15 month old Male (unaltered) has dual personalities. We have previous golden experience with another male for 13 years or as my wife likes to call him St. Riker. She is making fun of me because I keep saying how perfect he was and he did not do this or that. I am sure if I am remembering the good times only and there were a lot of them.

We have morning Riley and Evening Riley. Morning Riley is sweet, quiet and relaxed. Evening Riley is pushy, barky and won't leave my wife alone. He wants complete attention.

I am home during the day because of my disability because of 4 basic surgeries. My wife works during the day and Riley's personality changes once she comes home from work. He is very excited when she comes home and greets her with enthusiasm. From there the energy level rises and the demand for attention goes through the roof. My wife is the one who takes him for his daily walk of 2-3 miles around 7:15. By the way, you can set the atomic clock by his internal clock.

The last few weeks I have been doing some traveling to see my ill father. The weird thing is the dog's attitude has changed while I am gone. My wife called and said the dog was acting perfectly. He quietly sat and watched her sew, cook, clean and read. She said he was a completely different dog. Her comment was I wonder if he is a "One Person Dog"? this was a great observation on her part.

So, we are unsure how to stabilize or calm him during the periods that more than one person is around. BTW, he gets like this when our sons come home from college. He is very excited when they walk through the door. Barking and mouthing. I am concerned about anxiety. He tends to get nervous and demands to play over and over again. Wants to be petted and then starts the barking and barking right at you to get you to continue petting or playing.

So, any suggestions on how to just have one Riley ? Obviously, we prefer Morning Riley. He has one class of obedience under his belt and he did fine in the basic obedience class. He is a great walker on the leash and behaves while on the leash. We have put the leash on inside and he calms down immediately. So, we do this when company comes to visit.

Thoughts ? Suggestions ? Advice ?

Thanks!

PS-Here is Riley at the Atlanta Braves Game on Sunday.

It could be the age that he is going thru. My Bama went thru stages and was different dogs with different people. It was really wierd and I think some people didnt believe me when I said he didnt act like a particular way when they werent around. But now he acts the same all the time.

The Atlanta Braves have Bark in the Park twice a year. Once in May and then again in September. Last year there where 691 dogs there. Bobby Cox, who is manager of the braves has a foundation that supports dog call Paws Because and the dog tickets sold go to his foundation.

It was a lot of fun !
