We have been training Daisy to go to potty on an area of concrete in our backyard. She is doing very well now and always runs to the area whenever she needs to go. This has been working out well because now we never have to worry about stepping on suprises while playing with her on the lawn and it is easy to clean up and hose off.

The problem I'm finding now is that even though we clean up after her each evening and hose off the concrete...flies are becoming a nuisance and there is an odor. Also, this concrete area is rather large and the kids use it to play basketball, sidewalk chalk, etc. (after it is cleaned and hosed off of course) but I am worried that it is not sanitary for the kids to play so near where Daisy goes potty. Do any of you know of cost effective way to keep the area santized? What do you use? I found a product called wysiwash at http://wysiwash.com/ that looks pretty good. Have any of you used it, if so, does it work well and is it worth the money?

Thank you so much for your help!

Have you tried "Simple Green"? My cat for a while was going pee and poop on the cement floor in our furnace room rather than in her box. I used Simple Green which is a CONCENTRATED biodegradable all purpose cleaner and it cleaned it up really nicely... got rid of the smell too. I used it full strength but it's also nice as a general cleaner. I use it to clean my bathrooms and just about anything I can think of. I enjoy the smell too, it reminds me of licorice.

Nature's Miracle is an enzymic cleaner that you can get at the pet store. It's made specifically for pet messes. I don't mind it on fabric messes, but I prefer the quick results of my Simple Green on hard surfaces.

I don't know how it works on concrete but I also use simple green for EVERYTHING! I really like the scent for some reason also, I think it is worth the try!

How nice to hear that! I still have people/relative laughing at me when I say we build up a toilet in the garden for Amber and we even flash it after each pee/poo (with the hose!!!)

The idea came after we paved our garden to prevent muddy and wet paws in the house during wet days (we live in England…)

So in 2006, I decided to build up a toilet… So we dug up the soil as far as we could go approximately 60 centimetres deep, then we inserted/hammered 8 hollow pipes into the ground (for drainage) then covered the lot with layers of graving stones (medium size ones) and finally we put a couple of paving slabs on top.

Water is sufficient for us and we do not get any flies (even after the horrendous weather we’ve had lately - 30 to 33 degrees Celsius).

I think your problem is drainage. And maybe the type of concrete/paving slabs you laid down? Some absorbs liquids very well and some don’t. I paid extra and made sure that I had the later for obvious reasons!!

After a while, urine will permeate into concrete to the extent that it either won't come up or will become a persistent odor management issue. I would look at another option where they can go, take them for walks etc, it would be cheaper in the long run than digging up the concrete. You can seal your concrete in the short run but only if you can get the odor out. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all of the good suggestions!

I am going to get some simple green today, clean it really well and then seal the concrete. Also, Daisy gets her last puppy shots today and we can start taking her on walks, so hopefully that will help a bit to.

Thanks again!!
