My kids and I had just finished baking a batch of Cup Cakes today, they were sitting on the Wire Cake Cooler...cooling. Archie desperately wanted to come inside - (for some family time I thought!!!). I opened the door, he raced passed me straight into the kitchen, two big paws went up on the bench and he helped himself to hot two cup cakes (paper and all) . Archie then came straight back to the door, (looking very guilty and remorseful), and took himself outside. The look on his face said " I'm so sorry Mum, I know it was bad, but they just smelt so good - I couldn't help it.....". I did laugh.....

Archie is the first GR that I have owned, he is totally obsessed with food, which is great for training - but a pain in the butt, when the kids are eating, or we are having friends over for a BBQ etc... I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this annoying side of GR's.

Same here

I have a 8 month GR obssessed on food also. At our July 4th party he stuck his face in my home made BEAUTIFUL carrot cake. The problem is I know I should be furious and disclipine him but IT IS SO DARN CUTE I can't stop laughing. Had to cut off half the cake.

I have a 13 year old weimaraner who is still totally undisciplined around food. In her lifetime she has eaten a cake, a plate of chicken breasts, several loaves of bread, a bag of oreos, bagels. All of this has been from the kitchen counter where we thought it was safe from her reach.

Just two days ago, my son was sitting at my grandparents table with a piece of pizza in his hand but paying attention to the TV behind him. That's all the opening Max needed to move in and grab my sons slice. For the first few weeks we kept him strictly on puppy food but now that he's getting older he gets a smithering of people food. He eats olives, fruits, vegatables, pickles. The only thing he refused to eat was a carrot I froze for him. Maybe because it still had the peel on it? Goofy creature!

Last week Comet decided to help himself to a entenmann's glazed bunt cake. It was in the box and sealed sitting on my kitchen table.

The next day my husband comes home and find the box on the floor, not even torn. I came home from work of course looking for a little treat. Couldnt find it, and was thinking those kids of mine ate the whole cake today and I thought for a minute and my son spent the night somewhere and my daughter would no way of ate a whole cake. Sure enough I looked in the garbage the box was there and said to myself hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm COMET, he had that look of, I did it mom, I am sorry!!! I just said to him, I sure hope you shared with Sadie, Ergggggggggg

When Nugget was about 18 months old she stole a biscuit off the counter well after that she put herself in the corner. It was torward afternoon when I realized she was still there, I thought surely not I put a biscuit on the counter called her over gave her permission to jump up and get a biscuit after that she was fine and didn't hide in the corner.

In all of Peaches's 14 years, she never swiped food, that I can remember. Until she spent the weekend with a friend who had a Golden, too. The friend's Golden swiped a cookie off the cooling rack, on the table. Peaches followed her friend's lead, then happily greeted the owner with crumbs on her mouth and a madly-wagging tail, saying, "Look what I did!" She was so proud of herself for learning something new! What a goof!

Are you sure Archie isn't related to Griff? He has a passion for baked goods!

My corn muffins are 2 packages of corn muffin mix and 1 package of cake mix so they are corn muffin-cake. Last time I left them cooling unattended Griff ate 15 of them - cupcake paper and all. Booger!

Needless to say when I have anything baked cooling on the table, he is gated out of the room.

PS: At least Archie stopped at 2! T'was nice of him to leave you some too - very sharing of him! :p

I have 2 counter surfers.

The most unusual situation was Toby, at age 4, taking a can of unopened honey roasted almonds (the can had a foil covering underneath the plastic cover), over to his "spot", eating the entire can and then coming to get me in the other room to show me! He took the plastic cap off, undid the metal foil with his teeth and ate the entire can. There were no bite marks anywhere on the can or container. The most unusual part was right next to the can was a pair of sharp scissors that were right next to the can on the kitchen counter. I think he must have thought he could open it with the scissors, perhaps?

The absolute worst counter surfing prize was my cell phone, courtesy of Toby.

Barkley is very discerning. He will investigate bags of produce ripening on the counter. I've come home to tomatoes, peaches and avocados on the floor, untouched. Once he took a brand new loaf of bread, outside through the doggie door, and helped himself to the entire loaf. Another time I had made two pans of brownies and blondies for a social event I attended the previous evening. My spouse and neighbor decided to raid the refrigerator while I was out in preparation for going out for a sail. They took the pan out, helped themselves to a few of each and left the two pans, about 1/3 of the desserts left, on the countertop. I got home about 45 minutes later and saw two small bite sized pieces in each pan. I called him up on the lake and asked him why they left two tiny bites and why didn't they put the pans in the sink (well I knew the answer to the second one--laziness). He assured me they only took a few and there should be several left in each pan. I put two and two together and found my Barkley very bloated outside sleeping it off. I guess Barkley thought if he left me a bite size of each in the pan I wouldn't notice??

Both dogs have shared hubby's beloved Oreos. Both have also raided the kibble cannister when the top was not securely fastened and eaten themselves silly. No free feeding for these two! While on prednisone for an ailment Barkley dragged a 40 pound vittle vault full of kibble from the back of the house to the dining room in the front of the home. We have teeth marks to prove it (and we have the audio recorded--we were camcording the trash can after it had been raided a few times)

Toby's taken the big Costco size Nestle Quik cannisters outside to eat (hubby left that one out) as well as full jars of peanut butter left on the countertops. He also took a full container of Quaker Oats. Each of these caused major stomach distress but the good news is hubby learned where the pantry is located and now remembers to store these things after he uses them!

Our dogs continually teach us to keep our counters clean.

Dallas Gold... EEEEK! Your dogs must have lead stomachs!
Toby, yes, Barkley, not so much anymore. As he aged his stomach became more sensitive and now we are extremely strict about what he gets. He still scarfs bread left out for birds by neighbors and sometimes he gets distressed and gassy from it. We've learned about probiotics, pepcid and prevention regarding the counter surfing. The best defense is putting things away. You just never know what catches their eye. Once a counter surfer.....well, you just can't trust them too much after that!

Having Archie, has taught my kids to put their toys away and shut the bedroom doors. He loves ...well... anything that's not his!! I'm sure the counter surfing will continue in our house, we all try to keep the counter's clear now (my husband learnt the importance of that lesson after his baseball glove was chewed on!!). Glad to hear that we all are sharing the same experiences, and Archie is just a normal GR doing normal GR things (as annoying and expense as it is). At least he is not into pulling the washing off the clothes line....touch wood!!

Don't even THINK it - or he will! I swear! A dear friend told me to think positively about my dog and he will be good and for the most part she is right.

Your pupper is only 7 months old and I think he really, REALLY showed a lot of restraint by only eating 2 and then showing remorse afterward. I have great hopes for him - he is going to be absolutely awesome by the age of 3 - mark my words!

(When Griff ate the 15 muffins.. he sat there looking like the cat that got the canary!) No remorse at all! He was quite pleased with himself.

LOL, and I thought Cody was sneaky for eating socks! He's six months old now and he does look on the counter, but has not taken anything so far. He's just curious.

He loves food though, but has been good so far.

Our biggest problem is with socks and shoes. He eats holes in everything he can get his teeth on and pulls the inners out of all our shoes. We've learnt to close the bedroom doors and put our things away.

Zeppelin has eaten two corn cobs (that was a trip to the emergency vet), bag of rolls off the counter, donuts, muffins, a cheeseburger, stuffing from his toys, remote controls (three!! of them), a cell phone, paper towels, moss, grass and his personal favorite, horse poo. And let's not forget the hot dog that very nice child gave him at a BBQ. That kid was his new best friend and he followed him around for the rest of the evening.

Yup, he sure likes the food...sometimes i think he might be part goat! :D
