My friend on another forum raises Belgian Malinois.
Her pregnant female has gotten severely hurt, trying to jump a fence. It seems she won't be able to nurse when the pups are born. They are due soon.
If anyone knows of a dog with milk, who could help out, please pm me. She will also try to get help in bottle feeding, but a nursing mom with extra milk would help her immensely.
She is checking shelters, dog groups, etc. and would like the word passed along to all dog forums.
She lives in Glen Burnie, MD.
Thank you for any help you can give, even if it is passing the word along!
You might want to try contacting the National Dog Groups. They may put out an SOS to all the breeders on their mailing list for you. This group has a forum http://www.workingmalinois.org/ . I know this doesn't need to be breed specific, but maybe they can be of some help.
Here is an update from another forum member. Katrina is the owner, and Dru is the Mom dog. Katrina has had offers to hand-feed a few of the pups.
Dru had a c-section and reconstruction surgery on her tummy today at 1:00. Nine beautiful, tiny little babies. It took an hour to deliver the babies and another hour and a half to do the other surgery needed.
There is a little bad news and we need a lot of good thoughts still coming. Dru had a very severe infection going on in within the incision. The vet who saw her last night assured Katrina there was no infection but Katrina made the choice to take Dru to her other vet today and have a c-section done. Thank goodness because the infection was severe. She was given a broad spectrum antibiotic injection. The culture will be back tomorrow and then they will know if further antibiotics are needed.
The doctor had to cut a lot of the dead tissue away and then put her tummy back together. Her skin is stretched very tightly. The doctor then discussed the issue of nursing. Her 4 lower nipples closet to her vagina are viable. Katrina will have to try to let 4 at a time nurse a little and then rotate out. While the others are nursing, she will give them formula. She is trying to get the antibodies that the puppies so desperately need from Dru.
Now, maybe you can all send some good thoughts their way! THANKS!
good thoughts to mum and pups. hope all goes well.
i didnt know you have another dog feed pups.
do all breeds have the same milk then?
i know that in feudal england they used the peasants to feed the gentries babies, but i never knew dogs could do it.
do they share the milk with the mums litter or does the mum keep producing?
