How to stop marking behavior

We decided to wait until Fergus was 18 months old before neutering. His "day" is coming up in 5 weeks.

He hasn't had any problems other than when outside & off lead or on a flexi lead he marks like crazy. We should have tried to control this when is was on the flexi but didn't. So the behavior has been estabilished - shame on us.

Is there any chance to limit or eliminate this behavior? While he has never "marked" in our home or anyone else's I know that if another dog marked in their house and he visited I would be concerned he would mark.

What methods could we use and should we wait until after he has been neutered? If we keep him on the short lead he can't seek out places to mark but he still lifts his leg when he goes.

Dave

Keep him on a leash and interrupt him when he tries to mark. My dogs get to pee when we go out for a walk, and then that's it. If he tries to lift a leg, I just keep going so he doesn't have time to leave a "business card" behind.

Some people don't mind marking on a walk. IMO, even if you allow a dog to mark grass/trees, etc. while on walks, you should never allow the dog to mark property like fences, car tires, trash cans, etc. To me, that's just rude.
