I was reading an article the other day on the effects of neutering early and it linked to an older article on the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. I thought this bit was pretty funny and very true:

"But that is not the only reason the bouncy, amiable breed is the study’s focus. Goldens are the third-most popular dogs in the United States, which made it easier for researchers to find 3,000 subjects; they also tend to have besotted owners who pay close attention to their health — an important criteria for a project that demands years of owner commitment."

Glad to know it's normal to think your Golden is the best thing that ever happened. :grin2:

This is - in my opinion- a lot of the reason there is the mindset there is more cancer nowadays ... people pay so much more attention and spend so much more money than they did in the 60's, say, and good specialist vet care is more available.
I don't really think there is more cancer- just more knowledge.

Yeah, more trips to the vet will equal more diagnoses. Not necessarily more disease but certainly more awareness of a disease.

I was still disheartened to see that the study had not produced any "major revelations" yet (at least back in 2017 when the article was written). Even if the rate of cancer hasn't changed much in reality, I'm still hopeful that a long term large scale study may yield some useful information on prevention or risk reduction if it's possible.
