How old? Have you crate trained? Goldens can be prone to separation anxiety. They love being with their family. I didn't leave mine outside alone really, so I can't help you there. I did let him, once an adult, go potty out in the fenced yard alone occasionally, but I left the back door open for his return. He never stayed gone long. He'd potty and come right back in. Besides the trouble they can get into on their own outdoors due to environmental hazards, I didn't want to give anyone an opportunity to take my beautiful dogs. I don't exactly have guard type breeds (a Golden and Cavalier.) They are friendly to anyone who approaches. Mine definitely liked to know where I was and preferred me in sight. In his crate, Luke was fine when he was young, if I left for a short while. As he got older, he did fine just being left in the house. We always had a second dog for company.
Sorry -- I talk in present and past tense about my dogs because Luke passed recently. We still have sweet Abby (our Cavalier) and look forward to another Golden in the future.
One time I left Luke in his crate and forgot to close it. When I got home about an hour and a half later, he was still laying there with the crate door wide open. lol
This forum is a great resource for information. There are also breed specific books you can read to learn more about your Golden - and behaviors more specific to the breed.
