I lost my 9 1/2 golden a few weeks ago. We got a puppy recently and I had planned on having both dogs together for a couple months, but it wasn't meant to be. I saw an add on Craigslist that a woman is trying to find a new home for her 2 year old male golden retriever. I have been thinking about adopting this dog, but my husband thinks I am crazy since we have a new puppy. Has anyone ever had a puppy and then added a 2 year old golden to the family?
I think you're crazy too but don't know your situation. Puppies are a ton of work, they will be eating different foods at different schedules so will have to deal with a new guy.
You want your puppy to bond to you not the other dog.
Learning about each guy at the same time is really hard. Bringing a new dog into a new home requires just as much of an adjustment as the puppy is going through.
If you are at home all day to be with them it will still be hard. If you work that means you must teach and housebreak both dogs that will have totality different needs. Is this really fair to either one?
Not all adult dogs like puppies, so what happens if this dog doesn't like your puppy? And jumps him?
If either one has parasites internal or external you will need to address this for both.
How does this adult dog deal with meals, toys, bones?
Is the adult crate trained? House broke?
You are working under the assumption that all goldens are of good temperament. If you read through some of the post, you will find this is a myth. You will need to do obedience training classes with the new guy and work with the pup (on his own) as well.
Housebreaking a puppy requires you taking the pup out every 30 minutes to start and if the pup is older every hour or two. Isn't this enough for you?
Do you have a dog run to put the adult in if he doesn't like your puppy? Do you have multiple crates ... one for each?
Why would you want all this?? The idea is a good one but have you really thought through the needs of the both dogs?
My puppy's name is Spencer and he is 10 weeks. We got him two weeks ago and he is a wonderful pup. He is pretty laid back and my family is really enjoying him. I took a year off teaching and I am home most of the day. I know it is crazy and probably won't do it, but the beautiful golden on Craigslist is bothering me.
The lady's reason why she is trying to rehome her dog is because she is traveling more with her job and doesn't have time for him. I just feel really bad for the dog and want him to find a good home. This lady got him from a breeder in NC 2 years ago. She is asking $200 for him and the amount is negotiable. Do you think it would be rude if I tell her to give him up to a golden rescue group like Neuse River Golden Retrieve Rescue in NC?
The dog is 2 not neutered or not up to date on his shots. I feel like getting him and then giving him to Neuse River Rescue because they will screen potential owners and he would have a better chance of getting a good home from a rescue than on Craigslist.

If she got him from a responsible breeder she should be getting in touch with that person, who will most likely take him back. If you get in touch with her, I would definitely suggest that.
I agree with puddles. You're puppy will need all your time. The 2 yo golden will require all your time as a new pup in your home. I'd wait a few years to get your new puppy a friend. That would be great if you could get the 2yo and give it to a golden rescue. Thank you for doing that.
I think its a great idea to suggest a rescue. They are very good at screening and finding permanent good homes. If there are any health issues like heartworms from lack of previous care, they have resources for treating them. Beware some of these posting on Craigslist are scams.
I think this is not such a good idea. It's one thing to get a new puppy with an established dog already in your house. It's totally another getting a puppy and adding a strange dog to a new puppy situation.
What the issue is to me, is that you don't really know the 2yo golden situation. Just what they are telling you. Was he trained properly? You could be dealing with a young puppy and a full grown puppy that you need to break a lot of bad habits and retain. This is worse then a new puppy in many cases. Especially if the 2yo isn't horse broken Anna trained at all.
The best situation is for that dog go to a rescue to be placed properly and wait till your pup is at least 18-24 months before adding another dog to your home.
I would get to know the older dog's personality if that's at all possible, I mean if hes a big teddy bear why not? Your puppy might learn good habits/behavior from the older dog. That is ONLY if the dog is good tempered.I say this with a certain amount of experience, when my wife and I marred she had a 6month puppy and I had a 10 year old things worked out great for us and the puppy leaned a lot from my dog
I agree with Puddles, Shalala, Maggie’s Voice and Eeerrrmmm1. Lincoln was 10 years old when we got, then 8 weeks old Bear, last September. Besides being well trained, I knew Lincoln’s personality. He was a sweet dog who was wonderful to Bear.
You know nothing about this dog..only what the person on Craigslist is telling you. Even if she wanted to give him up, why is the dog not up to date on shots? That’s a red flag to me. As suggested, maybe get him and bring him to a reputable golden rescue. That being said, you will probably fall in love with him and not be able to part with him. I would make the suggestion to her. Please let us know what you decide and good luck.
I sent another message to the owner of the golden from Craigslist telling her to contact her breeder, or give it up to the Neuse River Golden Rescue Group. I even offered to come get the dog and take him for her. I really hope this woman isn't offended, but I explained my passion for goldens and I wanted to see her beautiful dog get a great home. I really wish I could take him, but all of your advice helped me realize it wasn't wise. Thank you!
Thank you for letting us know what you decided, I hope the owner will reach out to you. I hope you stick around here, you sound like the kind of person needed here.
You do need to bond with your puppy. Also, how do you know that 2 yr old male would like your puppy, he could hurt or even kill the puppy. Why is someone getting rid of a dog on Craigslist in the first place. I would be very leery about that. Your puppy needs your love right now.
Update on golden on Craigslist-The owner told me she had many people reach out and inquire about the dog. Once I told her about contacting her breeder, or giving up her dog to the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue Group she never responded back to my email. I tried and I hope that beautiful dog gets a loving home. She did take the ad off of Craigslist, so maybe he found a good home. Thanks for all of your advice!!
I hope the owner found a great home for this boy too.
I used to help with Intake for CFGRR that is no longer operating. Most of the GR Rescues monitor Craigslist for ads for Goldens, I contacted people looking to rehome their Goldens.
Usually the people who place ads on Clist, seem to be more concerned with obtaining money for their Golden vs. finding a really good home for them.
The GR Rescues are 501 (c) 3 non profits, they can not purchase a dog.
Carolina Mom, The weird thing about this situation is she was only asking for a $200 rehoming fee. I think she got promoted at Cisco and started traveling more and didn't have time for Freddie. I hope he got a good home.
IMO that is a reasonable amount and it is recommended when you are rehoming a dog to ask for a fee to ensure the dog is going to a home that really wants the dog, can afford to financially take care of it, and to prevent it from going to someone who may use it as a bait dog.
Tough situation for the owner, could be more to it than what the owner was saying too but it's really hard to say for sure.
If I ever found myself in that situation, I would do everything I could to make sure I didn't have to rehome my dog, there are a lot of other options.
Does your mom want to send the dog away urgently? So she doesn't care about the rehoming fee. If you want to let the dog find a good new owner, you can talk to your mom to look for a good owner with enough time. Or can't you send it to your friends who love golden retriever?
It's not the original poster's mom who is trying to rehome her dog - she saw an ad on Craig's List and is trying to get the person who is looking to rehome her dog to consider a rescue instead.
